What about a racing mmo like need for speed where you race each other and build and mod your cars?

Most MMO vets will tell you that while you're playing an MMO, you don't have much interest in playing (or doing! ;)) anything else. That translates into savings since you're not buying everything else that comes out looking for your next fix. Unless you're someone who pirates all their games, in which case you need to GTFO!

/agree - once you find an MMO that fills your niche, you will more than likely play nothing but that MMO [you'll stop going out with your friends, you'll purposely call in sick on patch days, etc...]

I use to be part of the "eh? $15.00 a month to PAY to play a game? What a waste! I'll go spend $50.00 a month to play MP games on FREE servers!" ...Then I decided to see what all the hype was about [SWG] and have been hooked ever since [not on SWG - but MMO's in general]. An MMO costs about 50 cents a day if you subscribe month to month [cost goes down if the MMO gives 6 month, 1 year, etc discounts]... so the costs are insignificant when compared to other forms of entertainment.

You missed the part where you lose your life. There's a reason the term "World of Warcrack" was created. I know a guy at college who spent (and to my knowledge still spends) 8 hours a day on WoW. I have literally heard girls on my floor talking about how they wouldn't consider a serious relationship with him because of that fact alone (He flirts more than me when he gets out of his dorm). A few of them were hot too. Sucks for him, more for me. :D

And fine, so it's not $180 per year, it's $150 per year.

That's still enough to buy 3 newly released games or 5 relatively new games if you wait a little bit.

i love how people bitch about paying 15$ a month for a game (entertainment) but have no issues paying 60$+ a month for cable tv (entertainment)

my way of entertainment is 45$ cheaper, yet its a dumb idea

TV can be educational, informative, and entertaining (occasionally all 3 at once) with literally hundreds of different programs to choose from.

That, and watching the standard TV episode takes about 1 hour max.

MMOs make you pay $180 a year for your life. (See my post above)

Well sure, there is certainly the risk of addiction that can lead to problems with work/social life/responsibilities. I think there's that allure for anyone who gets started on an MMO and even some single-player or non-MMO online games.

But again, I think WoW has improved on that somewhat (LOTRO similarly) with more emphasis on instanced content rather than world/server spawns, faster leveling, and less grinding. The main difference being you can control when you raid, the game doesn't dictate the terms for you and you spend less time overall grinding/leveling.

I've never played WoW, but in LOTRO it was much easier to pick up and put down than games I've played in the past. Raid 3 hours a night for 3-4 days a week then log out. There's many in my guild and friends of friends who find this style of gameplay to be much more accomodating in terms of RL commitments.

There's certainly still the risk of becoming addicted and neglecting RL responsibilities but I think WoW really brought out the closet gamers to show you can still have a successful career and social life and still be a gamer.

For life? Hardly. You can cancel your sub at any time. You pay as you go, there's no long-term commitment involved.

A better analogy for the TV comparison would be special packages like premium channels or even better, something like a season pass for a sport like NFL Sunday Ticket. Most people find those packages worthwhile if the content is something that interests them.

But back to my original comparison, if you can purchase 3 retail PC games for $150 in a year, but you spend most of your time playing an MMO so that you didn't bother buying any games in that year, there's no difference in terms of cost. I'm sure many can find 3 titles a year they regret buying or played through once and didn't play again.

From what I know, you have to spend hours a day playing any MMO to be considered "decent". Hence the "for your life". In college, I spend maybe 4 hours a week playing PC games (aside from the occasional floor-wide LAN).

As for buying shitty games, yeah, that happens from time to time, :p but I'll take variety over monotony any day. That, and I'm rather picky when it comes to buying games. Guess it's a personal preference.

And yes, your comparison to the premium packages is valid. I typically don't indulge in those either. Once again, personal preference.

I probably shouldn't be talking about spending anyways. (I'm saving up to buy about $500 of Flight Sim gear). :)

the only people that HAVE to spend a ton of time playing MMOs to be "Decent" suck at playing MMOs

There's an initial ramp up in terms of grinding levels and obtaining gear, but once you hit "end-game" you (or the game) ultimately dictate how much you need to play. There's not really any time requirements in terms of how much you need to play to be good; the time you spend just really determines how much content you experience.

And 4 hours a week?!?!? We'd often play that much in a day with Goldeneye and that was in a frat house. :)

Well, if it were that monotonous people wouldn't subscribe. And if they did find it monotonous after a few months, $10-15 in a month would certainly be better spent than $50 on a dud or a game that was worth a single play-through, at best.

There's still the initial retail price to consider, but most every MMO has free downloadable trials and include a month's subscription for free.

Well, at least for me, there is no hypocrisy. I don't watch TV, except for Stargate, which I get from the Internet anyway. :p

Please not another MMO, as they are right now they're a plague on the industry like Reality TV is for TV...I mean I won't mind it if they can actually improve upon the experience but right now its just lame.

Lol I'm a CE/Bio Double Major who's in the University Chamber Choir (looking at joining the Conert Choir in addition) and I play pick-up games constantly when the weather is good. That and I'm an amateur pianist (classically trained for 7 years), so I'm pretty busy :)

A true 'next-gen' MMO would include having an interactable world that characters could actually change in meaningful ways.

So far every attempt at that has, well, failed miserably (Most notable, I think, was Mourning: Realms of Krel, which involved a number of hardcore features like permadeath, generations, fort-building et cetera. I think it was up for 3 weeks after leaving beta?)

As an avid WoW player, if anyone can put together a truly interactive world, it would be blizzard (and hopefully not in retarded ways like the opening of the Ahn Qiraj gates, pre-BurningCrusade).

The MMO industry truly needs a breath of fresh air. Whether that's going back to the SW:G/Ultima/AC1/AC2 methods of infinite character customization (though, hopefully, without the massive grindfest), and/or moving on to truly dynamic content, Blizzard would be the ones to do it. I had high hopes for Hero's Journey, knowing Simu to be a company that tends to take an individual relationship with the players where players can actually contribute towards the story line... but at this point it's obvious that it's never actually going to release.

Here's just hoping that they don't take the bait that LOTRO, VG:SoH and EQ2 did, with cumbersome, required, group combat mechanics, and instead move towards another game like WoW, where everyone from the most casual to the most hardcore gamer can satisfy himself upon logging into the game, at least for a short while.

Yes...... D2 with updated graphics and today's resolutions. But not to go overboard with 3d BS. I'll not buy it if it's a pay per mth deal either!
Those that compare Hellgate London to D2 are fools and have not a clue!

SAY NO to D3 MMO!!!!!!!

All the people asking for a non-MMO update to D2. Go out and get Titans Quest +Immortal Throne Expansion, its like $30. Its like an updated D3 set in antiquity. Great game, but when you're done with it, you'll find yourself wanting more. Sad reality is that simply mimicking what's been done in the past and giving it a facelift just doesn't work well in the entertainment industry.

I have Titan's Quest and the Expansion. Did'nt think it was better than D2 though. No story.
