Blender problems with HD 4850.

If this is not the correct forum for tech issues, I'm sorry. What is the best place?

I use a program called blender (blender.org) a 3d modeling program that is free. I'm trying to get blender to run on my new computer with a HD 4850, but it crashes on startup.

Here's the funny thing. If I reinstall Catalyst 8.8 (the lastest display drivers for my card) and then choose NOT to reboot after the installation is finished, blender will work without having any problems. But as soon as I reboot, blender goes back to crashing imediately. This can be repeated indefinately, and is a walkaround, except it takes about a minute to install the drivers, and I don't really want to do that every time.

Any ideas what installing the drivers changes that allows blender to work? And then any idea what rebooting changes to cause the crashing again?

If anyone wants to get into the details, I'll post them, but I'm nearly certain it's related to the GPU and it's display drivers given the situation above.

Thanks for any help or tips.

you have to contact AMD. I don't know that they'd do anything, probably be up to the company that produces the program to fix it or get in touch with AMD.

You can always try

I'm not sure if this will help but here goes. I just got an AGP HD3850. I used the Cat 8.7 hotfix drivers and everything worked except Nero Recode on a Tivo MPEG2 file. This was absolutely the only problem I saw after running 10-20 different games and benchmarks (HL2, Bioshock, Oblivion, 3DMark06, Sandra, DxDiag, GTR2, Grid, etc.) . I had a simiar situation with the 8.8 drivers, it seem to work once and then would crash after reboot.

Today I fixed it with these exact steps:

1) Uninstall ATI Software from the control panel
2) reboot in SAFE MODE as ADMINISTRATOR
3) Run Driver Sweeper
4) Reboot in normal mode as ADMINISTRATOR
5) Cancel auto install of drivers
6) install Cat 8.8 Hotfixes (For my AGP card)
7) Reboot as normal user

System is steady now and everything is working. Exact error was show in the system event viewer when I would crash is:

"The driver ati2dvag for the display device \Device\Video0 got stuck in an infinite loop. This usually indicates a problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly. Please check with your hardware device vendor for any driver updates."

Your problem might be an old driver hanging around. I believe running Driver Cleaner in Safe Mode as Administrator is what fixed my issue as I had tried both the 8.7 and 8.8 drivers previously and still had the problem.

Damn, I was honestly hoping this was a parody thread about a problem with your blender in the kitchen. That's what I get from coming straight here from Off Topic.

I like the sound of the previously suggested clean + install in safe mode idea.

If that doesn't work, ask around at the forums of beyond3d.com, and rage3d.com, those sites usually have some pretty experienced 3D users hanging around them.
