lol. And while he's at it, maybe he can knock some sense into those crazy Windows devs that put all those pesky services in the OS to begin with.

Yeah.

The Viper started his famous "Win Services" page (one of the longest single page on the Internet with colors that is hard to read) with the idea that there is No Networks and special systems, but all computers are for Gaming (and there is a strong doubt whether any of these ""Resource Saving"? really do any thing significant when it comes to days GHz processors and GBytes memory even for Gaming).

As a result he shut down (by his advice) the Network's related services of thousands of computers.

Soon after came the era of proliferation of multi computers per Home, Wireless, and Sharing Internet connection. Thousands of people ended with None Functional Systems Not realizing that the Network/Internet related services are Disabled by choice.

P.S. Now the page is back, and in the near future few thousand more would "enjoy" the Shut Down of Needed Services.
 
I wish he would give a better explanation of what each service does[in laymans terms] so you would know which ones you can shut down.

Even better, you could just leave the services alone before you fvck something up. Seriously I see no reason to disable any of the default Windows services. The performance gains are pretty much non-existant and if you disable the wrong service it could cause a lot of problems.

To actually go through all the services and disable what you think is uneeded for no performance gain at all is just a big waste of time.
 
I pity people who follow this advice. He shows a fundemental lack of knowledge when it comes to Windows. For example, he states the following about XP Home:

Everyone on XP Home, by default, has Administrator privileges and the User name is "Owner." If I know that, so does everyone else on the planet. Change the name and / or password your account. If anything, password it. NEVER have an account unprotected! EVER!

Passwords are fine, but since most people will probably use a password like 'password' this tidbit actually LOWERS the security of the system. Why? Because BY DEFAULT, accounts with no passwords are not allowed to connect over the network. Only to the console. If you are not worried about physical access (like most people who use XP Home), an account with no password is very secure.

I see blackviper is no longer recommending that you turn off dcom server process, which no doubt brings a sigh of relief to many support people 8)

I stand behind the condemnation of the indexing service though, satanic piece of work that it is.

In answer to pooldoc though - he does, just click on the name or scroll down.

True, but then again so, for the most part, is tweaking minor options when overclocking and lots of people do that. Some people just like fiddling with stuff.

To be fair sometimes it's necesary. On my old laptop (my only laptop actually) I HAD to shut off everything that I could to get XP Pro to run on it. It's an HP n3250 475mhz AMD K6-2, 64mb RAM, 6gb hdd. I used a shell replacement as well (black box) and now the thing runs with less than 30mb ram and is faster and much more stable than 98se was. I did this as an experiment and have been really happy - but without shutting off many services it ran like molasses. I have no problems using it for what I needed it for - accessing internet, remote desktop sharing (obviously this service was not disabled), and watching avi's. For the few weeks of travel I do every year there was NO WAY I was putting out for a new machine.

On my desktop though I haven't shut off anything - have a gig of ram, so why bother?

Last time I looked at it he was recommending a bunch of stuff that was just silly. He didn't explain things properly, a nd made it seem like his suggestions were the best thing to do.

It's just bad documentation, and I can definitely blame him for that.

Why does he think turning Automatic Updates off is a good idea? How much RAM does this save - a MB? Less? I'll trade that for knowing my system doesn't have any fixable security holes or bugs, thanks.

I actually e-mailed him months ago. I read through his guide and spotted a mistake he'd made, and told him he might like to correct it before somebody breaks something. I can't even remember what it was now. He never got back to me. Nor is it posted on his "flames" page, and since I can't remember what it was now I don't know if he amended his guide or not.
