Since nobody has actually addressed the real reason Sabbath isn't in the HOF, here it is:
They don't want to be, and have said they, particularly Ozzy, would refuse induction.
October 04, 1999 04:02 PM - If frontman Ozzy Osbourne (news) has his way, Black Sabbath (news) won't be considered for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year. The pioneering British heavy metal band has been nominated for inclusion in the Hall for three straight years, but hasn't garnered enough support for induction.
"Just take our name off the list," Osbourne said in a statement issued Monday. "Save the ink. Forget about us. The nomination is meaningless, because it's not voted on by the fans. It's voted on by the 'supposed' elite of the Industry and the Media, who've never bought an album or concert ticket in their lives, so their vote is totally irrelevant to me.
"Let's face it, Black Sabbath have never been media darlings. We're a people's band and that suits us just fine."

What pop technically means and what people see it as aren't necessarily the same things. I, and I'd think most people, see pop & rock as mutually exclusive genres. Personally I've always thought of pop as easy listening called something else becuase the "artists" that come up with it don't want to think of their music as 'easy listening'.... Rock is something that generally has at least two guitars (real ones!) and doesn't sound like something they'd play at an old folks' home. 1999 is not rock, sorry. -=&%=- (or whatever he calls himself) is not a rock artist. If Sabbath doesn't want in, that's another thing of course. I probably wouldn't either - if ((/--|) is in, it can't be too exclusive a club anyway, and I don't blame them for not wanting to be associated with him.

That article is fake - Ozzy Osbourne isn't coherent enought to formulate a thought that complex.

Heavy metal goes back to such bands as MC5, Blue Cheer and the grandaddy of Metal: Iron Butterfly.Originally posted by: sparkyclarky
Actually, I believe Heavy Metal was started by Jethro Tull. But anyways, Sabbath rocks and should be in. They probably aren't due to some technicality. Prince is in because he made a big impact on the music scene, whether you like him or not.

I heard Blue Cheer for the first time a week or so ago. They win my Worst. Tone. Evar... award hands down. Ugh, I still shudder just to think of it.

Compare that "metal" to Sabbath metal. Two different worlds.
But whatever, I personally think it's hard to start heavy metal with a flute, but maybe I'm crazy. Also, they won that in '87 or '88, Sabbath was around for a while already. It's hard to start something after it's already going. Listen to Aqualung and tell me that's metal. It has it's moments of "metal" but I wouldn't consider them a metal band.
lol, I remember that. What a joke. I like Tull a lot but heavy metal winner over Metallica? lol.Originally posted by: Ness

That's the joke. The first ever metal grammy was won by Jethro Tull, while Metallica, the expected no contest winner, sat there, stunned. Apparently someone forgot to tell the voters what metal was, and that Jethro Tull was not metal.
Yeah, the lines between hard rock and heavy metal get blurred. If you're going to include bands like Zep and Tull in heavy metal, then just about any hard rock band from the 70's would fit there. To me, heavy metal's distict sounds as a music genre really began in the 80's with some throw back to the 70's with bands like Sabbath.Originally posted by: pulse8
On a side-note:
I've read many articles where people (including the recent one in Rolling Stone by Dave Grohl) call Led Zeppelin a heavy metal band. I'm always confused by this considering most of their music is blues influenced and at leas to me, doesn't sound like the other metal bands of the time. (Black Sabbath for example.)

Black sabbath and prince both are pure crap. However, I understand that some stoners (a lot of them) somehow see quality in black sabbath's music, so if I had to pick one I'd say that they have a better claim to the rock and roll hall of fame than "the artist previously known as a fruit cake".
