What pop technically means and what people see it as aren't necessarily the same things. I, and I'd think most people, see pop & rock as mutually exclusive genres. Personally I've always thought of pop as easy listening called something else becuase the "artists" that come up with it don't want to think of their music as 'easy listening'.... Rock is something that generally has at least two guitars (real ones!) and doesn't sound like something they'd play at an old folks' home. 1999 is not rock, sorry. -=&%=- (or whatever he calls himself) is not a rock artist. If Sabbath doesn't want in, that's another thing of course. I probably wouldn't either - if ((/--|) is in, it can't be too exclusive a club anyway, and I don't blame them for not wanting to be associated with him.

They don't want to be, and have said they, particularly Ozzy, would refuse induction.

ozzy has some beef with it, lets google for a quote, gee that was hard, the number one hit on google using "ozzy rock hall fame" tells us

linked

October 04, 1999 04:02 PM - If frontman Ozzy Osbourne (news) has his way, Black Sabbath (news) won't be considered for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year. The pioneering British heavy metal band has been nominated for inclusion in the Hall for three straight years, but hasn't garnered enough support for induction.

"Just take our name off the list," Osbourne said in a statement issued Monday. "Save the ink. Forget about us. The nomination is meaningless, because it's not voted on by the fans. It's voted on by the 'supposed' elite of the Industry and the Media, who've never bought an album or concert ticket in their lives, so their vote is totally irrelevant to me.

"Let's face it, Black Sabbath have never been media darlings. We're a people's band and that suits us just fine."

That article is fake - Ozzy Osbourne isn't coherent enought to formulate a thought that complex.

i think they call it "adult contemporary" these days. :)

prince is pop for sure, but he does use elements of rock and he really is a great rock guitarist. i'm not a fan of his music but there's no denying that he can tear it up on guitar.

No Rush? No Sabbath? No Van Halen? Well, this begs the question, wtf is the point of the Rock n Roll hof then? What a useless institution. If they keep this trend up in the future we'll see Nickleback inducted while Metallica and Nirvana are left out.

They could have used a "drugged-out-gibberish" to english translator.

Frrom reading this thread, I get an idea that the real issue has been avoided.

Its not about whether Prince should be in a hall of fame for his contributions to modern music (he should)

Its not about whether Black Sabbath should be in a hall of fame for their contributions to modern music (they should)

So should Rush, Van Halen, etc...

The real issue seems to be whether the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" really represents what the
fans would consider all of the hall of fameworthy artists/acts.

Heavy metal goes back to such bands as MC5, Blue Cheer and the grandaddy of Metal: Iron Butterfly.

I heard Blue Cheer for the first time a week or so ago. They win my Worst. Tone. Evar... award hands down. Ugh, I still shudder just to think of it.

I never said they were good. ;)

I like the MC5 and Vanilla Fudge too.

Iron Butterfly wins longest metal song evar award. Innagoddadavida - 17 mins long.

Compare that "metal" to Sabbath metal. Two different worlds.
But whatever, I personally think it's hard to start heavy metal with a flute, but maybe I'm crazy. Also, they won that in '87 or '88, Sabbath was around for a while already. It's hard to start something after it's already going. Listen to Aqualung and tell me that's metal. It has it's moments of "metal" but I wouldn't consider them a metal band.

That's the joke. The first ever metal grammy was won by Jethro Tull, while Metallica, the expected no contest winner, sat there, stunned. Apparently someone forgot to tell the voters what metal was, and that Jethro Tull was not metal.

lol, I remember that. What a joke. I like Tull a lot but heavy metal winner over Metallica? lol.

And the RR HOF is lame. They'll induct the likes of Jackson Browne and Bob Seger yet swear to never induct Rush. I just looked through the list of inductees and about half of them are crap when you compare it to a list of potential inductees. Seems like Ozzie has the right idea, any self-respecting musician would refuse induction into that sham.

On a side-note:

I've read many articles where people (including the recent one in Rolling Stone by Dave Grohl) call Led Zeppelin a heavy metal band. I'm always confused by this considering most of their music is blues influenced and at leas to me, doesn't sound like the other metal bands of the time. (Black Sabbath for example.)

Yeah, the lines between hard rock and heavy metal get blurred. If you're going to include bands like Zep and Tull in heavy metal, then just about any hard rock band from the 70's would fit there. To me, heavy metal's distict sounds as a music genre really began in the 80's with some throw back to the 70's with bands like Sabbath.

Black sabbath and prince both are pure crap. However, I understand that some stoners (a lot of them) somehow see quality in black sabbath's music, so if I had to pick one I'd say that they have a better claim to the rock and roll hall of fame than "the artist previously known as a fruit cake".

That's your opinion, and you're entitled to it.

However, even though you are wrong about Sabbath, you are right that they are more deserving than Prince.
Metal came mostly from Sabbath. There were other influences, too, but Black Sabbath are the originals.

They deserve to get in based on influence alone, whether you like their music or not.
