If you need to have car insurance, don't buy a car. Is that your logic? It's not about being pessimistic and about being prepared for a possible divorce.
 
11 years is a popular time for a woman to do this. Usually at 10 years you are into the 50/50 split, planning the divorce takes about another year putting them out at 11 years.

If you are ever planning on a clean split from an ex, do not wait much past 7 years.

In CA its 50/50 of martial assets no matter how long you are married. That is unless you have a prenup.

This is why Russell Brand is expected to come out sitting pretty in his divorce from Katy Perry after only 18 months. During those 18 months he made around $7million. She made between $35-45million. Add in their $6.5million house, they will split the $48.4-58.5million 50/50. In other words he will walk away with $24-30million(17-23million of money she earned) for only 18 months of marriage.
