No, the Polish actually BOUGHT a commercially-available version of the Enigma in the late 1920's. They basically hacked it in the early 30's, but the Brits and Americans were the ones who captured the machines or parts of them in the war.

Perhaps they did, but they ALSO captured one, temporarily, within a year or two before the war. An astute Polish postal official noticed the German machine at the post office and held it over the weekend so that the government could draw schematics of it before releasing it to the rather anxious German official who had failed to pick it up on time.

There's a book called "Military Intelligence Blunders" by Colonel John Hughes-Wilson which details what happened (Amazon). The Polish studied the machine, then turned what they had over to the Brits (or French who passed it on, can't recall). While the Germans added a fourth code wheel to the machine, the basic design given by the Poles enabled the "codebreakers" to skip an immense portion of the work in breaking the code. Without that information, it's unlikely they would have broken the code, according to Hughes-Wilson.

<< Yes, but he never ducked, never even attempted to avoid any fire. It's always the same in movies like that, to show 'courage' they show stupidity, to show 90% of other emotions they use slow motion and music. >>

FYI: Duvall's character from a Vietnam movie you may have heard of called "Apocalypse Now" was also "stupid" and like BHD, based on a real person who acted in such a manner. The pilot was legendary in his day and amazingly enough, never received a scratch throughout his time in Vietnam.

<< Why are American soldiers in movies like these always shown in a simliar light:'We're brothers' 'No one is left behind' etc etc, whereas in reality the commanding officers are always more concerned about the destruction of the ordenance rather than the downed soldiers. >>

As a former soldier (disclaimer---I was not infantry nor was I ever in any combat scenarios) in a combat arms unit, I felt very strongly that if I were ever put into a situation regarding my fellow soldiers being wounded/incapacitated that I would've have done everything in my power to get them out of the situation---surprisingly enough, this applied even to guys I may not have liked as individuals, but respected as fellow soldiers.

And every commander I had seemed to genuinely care for the men under his command (even had an ex-Ranger with the combat scroll of the 75th RR as a BTN CMDR)...and yes, they still cared about their OER (Officer Eval. Report).

If you've never served, I can't really see how your opinion is relevant regarding servicemen (or correct). And yes, movies are movies and should be treated as such.
And since you've made your opinions only on what you've seen in the movies...well, that says a lot.

Try reading the book and then seeing the movie first. You obviously think that this was another hollywood movie without any truth behind it. It is true to the book and what actually happened, but obviously they had to do some "hollywood" things like Sizemore and the music thing.

6) Anyone count how many times they repeated the letters :'RPG'? Soldiers handbook page one: 'You MUST shout the name of whatever weapon the enemy are using!'

As for this comment, what are you doing even reading a soldiers handbook?? If you did, and you were in the military, you would know that an RPG is a ROCKET PROPELLED GRENADE.

If you cant stand the heat, get out of the Somalia movie...

SO you didn't like the movie. Your opinion. I liked it. My opinion. No big deal. Get over it already. 😉

<< 1) Why does Tom Sizemore always play the invinsible army veteran who never ducks yet mysteriously never gets seriously wounded. >>

AHAHAHA, Someone else sees that too!!!! He does that in SPR too!!!!! Oh that pisses me off so much. He just strolls around:|

Haha...come on now, Tom is just a plain badass! He got shot in the ass and shrugged it off in SPR! He wasn't bad in "Heat" either!

Haha, at least he got shot in the forehead in Heat 😉

I don't think he was stupid. I think he represents the old guy who's been in the Army and been shot at so many times that now, he just doesn't care. It a good contrast to all those guys who are ducking and dodging and still get shot.

I agree with some of your other comments but for a few of them, you have to remember that it was based on a true story
