And to think, in all places - the Hot Deals forum.

Now be a good boy and mail out Gramma a nice blank check with your address on it
so I can be sure to get your Christmas present off in time!

Also, your old Bompa sends his love from Jackson.

Gramma, I know your old and senile, but I need to remind you that I'm a girl. I'm also not big enough to write checks, but I do know how to cash them!

Only thing I picke dup last year at BB was the GF3 Ti card. Not sure why people ge tup so early in the morning though. Just go the day before (or less than 30 days before) buy the stuff, then simply get a price match. Sleep in late, take your time, miss the crowds.

Of course some places try to keep things in the back warehouse and not put them on the floor but asking the right person nicely can usually get them to pull the stock out since they have it and just don't want to sell it early.

Unfortunately, this is a one day only type thingee.....I doubt even a good $10 or $20 tip wouldn't get you one early...:(

Price should not exceed $799, for this deal to be competitive. Otherwise the price is not very relevant because this system will see major price drop in the months to come. why? It utilizes some of the latest components (such as CPU), which are always priced high for a period of time then drop sharply. In a different way of saying, this system has a high rate of depreciation.

but as long as the $ is < 1200, ur not being ripped off. a similarly configured Dell system (exact same, except video - dell has ti4200 64mb) cost $1177.00, but then u'l have to figure in the service / support, harman kardon speakers, and higher quality case, etc.

go configure a dimension 4550 urself.

In light of the recent dell desktop deals.. what price would make this system hot? (how cheap does it have to be to be worth our while getting up early and standing in line in the cold)

$999?
$899?
$799?

a rough (conservative) estimate of prices on parts: (taking guessed price cuts/drops from now until then)
cpu: $250
mobo: $80
ram: $40
vid: $100
hd: $80
cdrw: $40
dvd: $35
case: $35
spks: $30
modem: $10
NIC: $10
MS sw: $100
sound and the front ports: $40
mouse and keyboard: $20
---------------------------------------
total: $870

does that seem about right? it's probably on the low side..
:p

I got in on this deal last year.

1 warning:

Not only do they not take credit cards, they also don't accept every ATM card. I guess that means they don't belong to all of the available ATM networks (look at those little logo's on the back of your card). My card was from Bank of America, so don't just assume yours will work. I never did figure out what networks they were on. So if you're standing in line in the midwest somewhere freezing your ho-ho's off only to be snubbed at the door, don't say you weren't warned!!!

Anyway, the PC rocks! I haven't used most of the free software on it (didn't need works, haven't tried a DVD yet), but it's good to know it's there if I need it :) I even had to call tech support once (yes, I feel shame). I can't remember what I did...maybe I wanted to install some beta software or something. Anyway, I needed to use the restore CD and it wouldn't work. Turns out the CD labeled restore CD was actually the XP CD, and the WinDVD cd was the one I needed. The restore program was in German, but the guy was able to walk me through it in seconds. They haven't posted drivers on their website very frequently, but I guess that's a good thing since I haven't had any problems. I have seen a few drivers available on Windows Update.

Intel just annouced new prices today. They annouce a 3GHz chip Thursday, making the 2.66 the third string proc, which means a pretty big price drop. Personally, I'd wait until next year when they announce the next chip (so the prices come down on the 3GHz). With hyperthreading, it's almost like having 6GHz of desktop processing power. I wonder how fast the fireworks show in solitare will be then? ;)

Cool. Thx much for the feedback on your purchase from them. :)

Although nobody knows what the exact price is going to be, my guess is in the $1000-$1100 range. Here's why:

Their current P4 tower with the closest configuration is going for around $1059 US in Germany. The one they're planning to sell through Aldi's has better specs so I doubt the price will be off by much. They aren't known in the US but they are well respected in Germany. If this price ends up being near $800 or $900 this is definately a hot deal. I mean d@mn, look at those specs! I doubt a system with these specs could be built for less (unless of course you buy it piece by piece while reading the AT forums ;) ) Thanks for letting us know about this upcoming "deal" sbpd. :)

My next door neighbor manages an Aldi so I asked him about this last night. He is quite illiterate when it comes to PC's but he seemed to think it would be around $899. Wouldn't exactly confirm, but asked me if I thought that was a good deal. I told him Yup, and if he's in the market for a new pc, he should probably think about buying it....

Are all ATM cards automatically debit cards?

Before you all hype this thing and yourselves into the stratosphere, here's a little reality.

I assembled a computer in October with similar charectoristics (in fact some better!!) for UNDER $400 by selectively buying parts listed on "Hot Deals" here and over at the fat place. Now I'll grant you that Monty is talking about a serious CPU here, but get real!!

And, I ain't sleeping over in some grocery store parking lot and fighting with a hoard of unshowered bargain hunters to be first in line to save some trivial amount on a Dutch built computer priced over what I can assemble it for. Where's the fun, or sense, in that?

I can tell you with great certainty that come 1:00 am Friday morning after Thanksgiving, I will be huddled outside the Best Buy in Topeka, KS, thermos of hot chocolate or cappaccino in hand, and hopefully not needing to pee for the next 6-8 hours. Sure, its a 35 minute drive to that store, but it will be worth it since I got a couple hard drives, geforce 3, and more there last year.

Thats the fun of the season..
Its what its all about!!

P.S. note to self, look for a catheter or large milk jug to pee in.
