In Canada we have Boxing Day (Dec 26) which I understand is the equivalent? We have big sales on that day (well usually it's limited quantity door crashers and retailers giving marginal deals on other goods).

It is the day after thanksgiving (which falls on thursday) when stores start there big push for Christmas with sales. The "black" comes from the idea that stores' earnings can go from red (loss) to black(profit).
