I'm glad theyre going to take the chance on some modern music again. Though I agree Prince was good but most of the other recent performers just aren't worth seeing live anymore. Was the music bad? Not really but the show sucked.

I just hope they try to mix it up a bit and don't do 4 years of similar popular music maybe next year do some COUNTRY!

Pick one:

1) Good music, bad lyrics, good performers: Black Eyed Peas
2) Bad music, good lyrics, good performs: Modern Rock
3) Good music, good lyrics, bad performers: Classic Rock

Really, you just can't win. You book a The Who or Springsteen and you get a band WAAAAAAY past their prime. You book a Black Eyed Peas and you get good music and performance, but the lyrics quoted above. You book a Weezer or Green Day and you get some good lyrics and performance, but 10 minutes of power chord progressions.

And it's all compounded by the fact that whomever is booked has to be recognizable to about a billion people. There's plenty of bands that will fulfill all your criteria, but if the NFL books The Black Keys or The Hold Steady or some medium-sized really good band to perform, 90% of the viewership is going to change the channel come halftime.

At least they didn't get some over the hill rock band. And I generally like over the hill rock bands.

I agree...Though rock is my genre of choice, The Who(Roger Daltrey specifically) sounded like complete shit...I almost shot my TV.

Old B.E.P. = good
New B.E.P. = wtf

Exhibit A

Well the B.E.P. have admittedly swapped to try and fit into the mainstream. As good as their old stuff is it would never keep them as popular and relevant as they have been in recent times.

has anyone really ever given a shit about a super bowl half time performer?
Far and away more interesting than the game. If the half time show was like the game, it would be four hours long and the musicians would take four ten minute breaks to get through a three minute song. John Madden would be stopping the action to circle the guitar player's fingering.

The best performance in years was Prince.... He rocked the superbowl.

The Who did very good last year. Keith Richards looked more dead than ever when the Rolling Stones were out there...

They could definitely do better on picking a band for halftime...but it's typically a fast-paced show of medleys anyhow so maybe the format of the BEP's will work. It's not like I can stand listening to a full version of any one of their songs anyhow. Too overplayed and internally repetitive....but what do you expect. They wouldn't be a band without Fergie there as eye candy when they started...they've been going downhill every year along with her looks.
