Bitcoin mining is ruining 280x prices for us

When the 280x first came out I was able to purchase one for around $349 if I wanted. Now its $439 like honestly wtf. Not only that, but they are sold out everywhere I look for them. At this point I'm going to have to settle for a 770 which is more expensive and doesn't perform as well. This bs has retailers jacking up prices because they know that people will buy these cards no matter the price, and I understand supply and demand but thats ruining it for us actual gamers who are purchasing this card for actual gaming use.

What gives you the idea the 770 doesn't perform as well? The 770 and 280X are basically even with each other. And i'd argue on the software side, that NV's software is superior in terms of features that you can use. Crossfire / eyefinity on the 280X is still broken and has been for years (with the 7970, which is the same card). This isn't the case with the 770. Anyway, If you get an aftermarket 770, you can overclock to have a meaningful increase.

FYI, you can get the MSI gamer 770 - and if you call newegg and have them remove the 3 game promo, you can use the masterpass code for like 40$ off. That's a GTX 770 overclocked for around 280 bucks. Another card to look at is the DC II 770 - it is selling for 340$ before promo, and should be right around 300$ after the promo. Again, you'll need to call newegg CS or talk to their chat and have them remove the 3 free games for masterpass to work. Not bad if you ask me. The decision would be a tough one if the 280X were being sold at MSRP, but the 770 is basically even with the 280X. Some nvidia favored games will be faster on the 770, while AMD favored games (Square enix games) will be slightly faster on the 280X. Overall though when you average it out. They're tied.

Sold my reference GHz 7970s for $400 ea, got the MSI 780 TF for ~$380 (after selling off the games).
Considering I bought my 7970s for $331 ea way back in mid-2012 and paid them off with BTC mining, I made out like a bandit.

Maybe not compared to the nvidia equivalent. But looking at current prices and considering what AMD has to offer right now, they are a pretty good buy at $400. Unless you were lucky enough and managed to get a reference 290 for around the same price. They would be an amazing buy if the price went back down to $299 but that's probably going to be a few months away.
 
You know I am also thinking of going with the GTX 770 Gamer at this price with the promo. I am a bang for the buck person and imo this is. If not happy with the GTX 770 then if the 290 AIB's in time drop to around 400.00 on NE then maybe sell or e-bay the 770 and pick up a AIB 290. The GTX 770 Gamer right now with promo is $170.00 cheaper than the $499.00 Tri X 290 even with promo on the Tri X 290.

the only real advantage of the r9 280x over the 770 is the 3GB vram, but you can get even a 4GB gtx 770 for less than an r9 280x atm. So the pricing doesn't make any sense for gamers.

Not sure what the LOL is for. Spending $300 for a GPU with only 2GB of VRAM is not wise if one intends to keep it for longer than 15 months. The best decision is to get a 770 2GB and sell it within a 15 months window. After that it will follow the fate of all the other cards whose resale value/performance got penalized by lack of VRAM

8800GTS 320MB

5870 1GB
GTX570 1.28GB / GTX580 1.5GB

However, right now 770 and 7970GE/R9 280X have very similar performance and with the price of R9 280Xs, the 770 is the clear winner for gaming.

I can get a [FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]MSI GeForce GTX 770 OC Twin Frozr IV 1098/1150MHZ 2GB 7GHZ GDDR5 with 3 games for $359.99 but I feel like that would be back tracking in terms of performance from my GHZ 7970 that I use to own.

The 770 isn't worth a penny over $300, IMO. If the 280X was still available for $300 it wouldn't even be worth that much.

Is SLI or Crossfire even worth it these days? Do the stuttering, and other problems that has plagued it for years still apply? Could I not SLI some 760's or crossfire some r270's and get some great performance.

I bought 2x 280X earlier this month for $285 each. I wouldn't recommend spending over $300 (MSRP)
 
MSI GTX 770 Gamer is $319.00 and 3 free games right now at NE and if you get the promo the GTX 770 gamer is $288.00.

SLI 760 depending on your power supply might need to upgrade it.

SLI 760 review and chart below, keep in mind a AIB GTX 780 or AIB 290 overclocked are faster than a Titan and depending how you much you can overclock the 780/290 you can close in on a reference 780 TI performance and sometimes faster.

Before the recent price jumps, you could find 7950s for as low as $150 brand new on sale, 7970s for as low as $180 brand new on sale. That should give you an idea of how inflated prices are and where prices will go if cryptocoin prices fall back to where they were 2 months ago.
