I would go to the mall or a similar public place and people watch. You don't have to talk to anyone, just observe.
I love doing that.

Kinda creepy if you stare too long though.

Man, you are the only one who can do it. No one's going to do this for you, not even your wife. you especially don't want to put that burden on her, if you do you'll lose her.

I don't like the term "bi-polar", or any other label for that matter, because the automatic solution is to mask it with meds.

Its unfortunate that there are so many that are uneducated about mental diseases. I have read a lot about them and I do understand what you are going through, unfortunately I think a lot of times the only thing that helps is long-term therapy.

Therapy is better than medication (in most situations, though there are some [i.e. schizophrenia] where it is not). It changes brain chemistry in the same ways as medication, sometimes better than medication.

Just run, run for miles, in the rain. Wear an old pair of shoes and some heavy clothing.

I jog, bike, and walk in the rain all the time.
Usually I butt heads with this man, and personally, I hate running, but biking in the rain is awesome. Especially if you can find a rural road to bike on. This is one time when I'm giving a Thumbs up for JLGatsby.

Well what is it hen you cry for stupid or no reason, are paranoid people are talking about you, lack of motivation, would rather die than to continue feeeling the way you do, have racing thoughts and in the past self mutliation. I do have a shrink, am seeing a counselour again and am starting to go back to a group but the feeelings are so controlling sometimes its reallly hard to understand.

So are there other days when you feel energetic and super happy?

Go out and buy a chocolate milkshake with some St. Johns Wort =)

Seriously though, things aren't as bleak as they seem :) I hope you can feel better soon!

Are you sure you're bipolar? You don't seem to be describing any characteristics of mania at all.

DO NOT suggest going off meds!!! Therapy in conjuction with meds is good, with a gradual decline in meds as prescribed by your doctor.

Get out there and run!!! Have fun... Enjoy the peacefulness of the rain on your face. Fill your lungs with the crisp air. Good luck!

Where did I suggest getting off of the medications? I was just making a point of fact.

Man, most this advice is BS. First off, bi-polar is not a label. It is not depression. It is not caused by lack of excercise or a crappy diet. It is a disorder that is caused by the brain's prolapses and synapses not firing correctly. It is really no different than diabetes in that you cant excercise and eat your way to a healthier you. (Yeah I know there are exceptions, but the exceptions make the rule).

Secondly, I feel for you. I was finally diagnosed 7 years ago, and without going into all the gory details, it is not fun. Take your meds, dont miss ONE DAY. It is true it may take you several months, or even years, to find the combo that works for you. But you gotta give it time. I suffer the same as you in that I really avoid crowds. I'm not paranoid, but I just get really annoyed, so it's a stress I dont force myself to endure. I wouldnt recommend it for you either.

There are alot of good support sites to help you understand it, one of which I PM'd you.

Good luck man, and lemme know if you need to talk-

Bi-polar disorder shouldn't be taken lightly. It's usually not something that can be just "talked off" or "shaken off" like minor depression. The key here is to find meds that work, that keep you from hitting that lowest of humanly low feeling. Unfortunately, if you are truly bi-polar, then those wonderful highs you have will disappear also. It's the trade-off you have to make for normality in your life. Although it can flatten your affect, in the long run it is worth it. It can be almost impossible to merely will yourself to overcome this condition and carry on a normal life. You need meds, and a support group.

Also, you might find meds that work great for you, for years, or the rest of your life. Then one day, you wake up, and it just doesn't work anymore. That's when the doctors have to try something different. It's part of the ongoing process. Whatever you do, don't lose hope, and don't isolate yourself from other people. Seek healthy relationships with other people, and if your religous it might be time to stay/get back in touch with that part of your life.

I'm not a psychologist, but let's just say I have a lot of experience with this kind of situation.

go outside, get some sunshine. then if you feel up to it, go to the mall. it'll keep your mind occupied. go visit a bakery or an ice-cream parlor and indulge yourself.

you may do one or more of the above, but I strongly recommend the sunshine. just go to the park, pick a nice spot and sit down. kids playing, pet dogs running around, flowers, birds and sunshine. a shrink couldn't hold up a candle to mother nature.

take it one step at a time man. it's your life, you made it this far, so you owe it to yourself.

Feel free to PM if you wanna talk.

That's kind of the nature of the beast, unfortunately. The wife still has occasional bad spots, usually for about a week or so, then just comes out of it. Basically, just push yourself for the next few days (and get others to help push if needed) and it'll work itself out. Just give it time.

EDIT: Spelling is bad before my first cup.
