It seems like big money is backing this movie.. I'm not expecting a cheap Doom-type film. The problem is.. what will the surprise ending be now? "Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski. Universal is in talks with Oscar nominated scribe John Logan (The Aviator) to do the script..."

The setting itself, Rapture pre-breakdown, presents a number of opportunities. I'd rather they adopt it and write a story than attempt to re-create the game's main plot.
 
I'm thinking
A- Lord of the Flies level mental trauma for the little girl actors
B- Some interesting midgets
C- CGI which will also be interesting, good or not I have no idea
 
Has there been a good game-to-movie conversion yet? I had decent hopes for the Dungeon Siege one, but I'm easy to please in movies....

My favorite one is Mortal Kombat. But calling it "good" is subjective. I thought it was a good game-to-movie adaptation, but others certainly don't.

😱 I had to look up who Uwe Bowl was. Wow, I can see your point now. Director of BloodRayne 3, BloodRayne 2, Bloodrayne, House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark, Postal, Far Cry, Alone in the Dark II. How is he still directing?

The Final Fantasy movies were good. I liked the first one (The Sprits Within), and Advent Children was great.
 
This one has more of a chance simply because the story/script/style of Bioshock seems very movie-able. It's a very artistically driven game.

Could turn into a decent movie.

Actually Dungeon Siege was a fun movie.
It wasn't epic or amazing, but god damnit, it was a FUN film.
Not entirely sure how much it had in common with the games though, since I never played them.

And it's Boll, not Bowl.

And the Resident Evil films have done well, and IMO are decent. Tomb Raider was quite successful too, and watchable.

I haven't actually watched it, so I can't say how good Dungeon Siege was, I was just pointing out how absolutely no one should have any hopes for it being good before seeing it. And it doesn't really matter how much it had in common with DS, because here is the funny part, DS didn't have a plot, it was literally, some farmer dude on some land grabs a pitchfork and starts fighting bad guys. It's like writing a movie to the game rogue.

FM Chocobo, Boll was able to make so many movies because they were practically government funded under a loophope. That loophole is closed now, but he was able to make enough profits that he can continue on.

None of these films appeal to a wide audience the way, say, Pirates of the Carribean did. With Verbinsky directing this has the potential to be a huge hit, especially since it will have a real marketing department. At a guess, I'm going to figure they will play down or flat out not mention in the marketing that the source material is a videogame.

By not mentioning the movie's roots as a game, gamers will see the name and know what the deal is, and non-gamers won't be turned off by the thought of a video-game movie. Bioshock doesn't yet have the cultural impact of Halo, which has crossed over into the mainstream.
 
I think this movie is going to be amazing, though I am not a big fan of Pirates 2 & 3, they always had incredible set pieces and top notch animations.

My favorite video game movies are still the Tomb Raider ones, IMHO they really nailed the whole Laura Croft feel for both the movies.
 
I just hope it isn't exactly like the game. Maybe they could let you see Rapture pre-breakdown and make the story from another character's perspective. Possibly one of the characters in the recordings. That dude who worked on the plasmids (the asian guy) HAS to be in it.
 
Well House of the Dead sucked. But Blood Raine 1 was watchable. Alone in the Dark was ok, not the greatest but ok. I didn't know he did Dungeon Siege but at least someone said it was fun. I think the biggest thing about Ewe Boll is he is inconsistant. Maybe its just him personally or it is a budget constraint. I thought some parts of his movies I've seen were well done then it just seems to loose direction and come off half baked.

Another thing is, I usually don't turn off movies. I enjoyed Blood Raine ( TNA is always a pleasure to watch ) so I went to watch Blood Raine 2. If there is TNA I'll never know because I turned it off very, very early. So usually when you talk about a bad producer/director usually there is hope they get better with time. Ewe seems to be able to get worse with time overall and at the very least being consistent at being inconsistent.
 
So, will 2K Games officials be entering the movie theater every 10 minutes to check our ticket stubs? Probably want to verify our popcorn and drinks are officially licensed 2K Games products as well. I didn't buy the game, and I won't be seeing a movie based off it.
 
I'll definitely be interested to see how this turns out. It appears they are compiling a decent group to work on it, so at least it won't be another Bowl turd. It may be the first video game movie I see in the theatre since the first Resident Evil.

The first RE flick didn't feel so much like a video-game spinoff to me. I thought that the development of the plot, characters, and environment were top notch for an action/thrill movie, and Bioshock certainly has all of the elements in place to do the same. Color me skeptical though, it'll probably suck. But there's more potential with Bioshock than with just about any other game I can think of.
 
im actually quite interested to see how this comes out.

the whole setting and storyline for this can translate to a solid film.

all depends who does the translating.
 
Perhaps the movie will follow the rise and subsequent fall of Rapture...about the power struggle between Ryan and Atlas...the game protagonist doesn't even need to necessarily make an appearance...the back story was only fleshed out with the audio diaries, but tells a compelling story.

The descent of rapture into genetically modified madness and civil war would cover quite enough ground.

Agreed.

I thought Resident Evil (the first one), Mortal Kombat, Silent Hill, and Tomb Raider (both of 'em), were pretty good. I'm sure there are others that I'm forgetting that I liked (I don't have the energy to root through my DVD collection). I agree that Bioshock could really pull it off given that it's so heavily based on Ayn Rand's work and the game itself is incredibly atmospheric.
 
I liked Resident Evil. The rest were just bad. I thought Silent Hill was one of the stupidest movies I'd seen. The only thing they got right was the creepy atmosphere.
 
I'll be watching this one for sure. There's a ton of backstory that could be explored, or they could even redo the whole story.
