Newer versions hide themselves from DRM software. If you use an older one, or one that wasn't made to bypass copy protection you might have problems. Some DRM schemes wouldn't even let you have Nero installed.

Neither did Bioshock, in spite of high review scores. I haven't seen Bioshock on top of any games charts.

It sold alright for the 360. It's big issue was it's SP only...if it was MP I definitely would have bought it.

I would skip bioshock if I had it to do over again. I got it 2 weeks ago and took a few days to get it working on vista 64.

- After installing it, the installer updates the game but it still doesn't run. You have to go out and find the 1.1 update patch and install that.

- Trying to run the game caused strange behavior with my firewall, it was constantly popping up asking me to approve things no matter what I did. I had to uninstall it and go back to windows firewall

- The last thing, and by far the worst so far is that it broke firefox. After installing it and restarting the computer all of the files in the firefox directory would delete themselves. So I'd reinstall firefox, only to have them delete themselves again, and again. The only thing that fixed it was installing firefox to another directory. I couldn't believe it, it just seemed like a joke to me. These people are criminals, who knows what secuRom is telling the company about me - all to play a game.

If you're willing to wait, Steam will have a decent sale on Bioshock at some point for sure, and then you can avoid all the DRM. I used to hate Steam as I felt it restricted how I could play (I didn't have a great connection back when it was originally made and offline mode wasn't around or didn't work) but in comparison to what companies stick on their discs these days, it's one of the least intrusive methods to protect their copyrights.

Edit: I was wrong, steam has the securom as well.

By the way, thanks OP. I went by CC today and bought it. It had $50 on the box, but it was $14.99 + tax at the register. I will have to stick it into my queue to play after the Fallout series (currently playing Arcanum).

If any of you want to discuss SecuROM (the DRM that infects Bioshock) specifically, we would value your input over in the SecuROM discussion thread.

Oh my, disregard my previous post, it appears I was completely wrong about the steam version and it is in fact plagued by securom. Woe is me.

Bioshock is totally worth $15. Seriously, who here is going to isntall the game 10 times, and who uses multiple user accounts on their gaming computer? Ignore the SucureROM (it's not like you ever see it) and just play the game. It's a game that got some of the best ratings PC games have ever had, so just enjoy it.

Thanks for the heads-up -- I need to try that demo for Sins of a Solar Empire. I won't patronize a game with stupid DRM like BioShock.

You really should try Bioshock. The world of Rapture was founded by a man named Andrew Ryan. Sounds like you might be related..lol

Seriously...by skipping it, you are missing out on one of the best games of all time. Don't be silly.

At least play the demo to get a glimpse of what you're missing ;)

Sins for the win! Sins is lots of fun if you enjoy 4X strategy and RTS, thought it might be seen as being a little slow for an RTS. An online multiplayer 3v3 on the large random single star map only takes about an hour-and-a-half on average before it's been clearly decided. It's a fun game and it's pulled me away from Unreal Tournament, which is saying a lot.

If you buy Sins--you have to come play it online! Single player against AI just doesn't compare to playing it in online multiplayer, so after you know the game mechanics and basic strategy, getcher butts onto Ironclad Online. Can you beat the amazing WHIPperSNAPper?

I picked up BioShock, but then I started playing the Sins demo to see if I should pick that up too. I'm not a huge RTS/strategy fan, but I like some and I like scifi games like Homeworld. Anyway, the first couple matches were rough. I didn't seem to be making any progress, compared to other similar games I've played in the past. So, I started looking up different strategies and trying different settings for the opponents. Just this evening, I played the first match that I finally started making progress on, not too easy, not to hard, and I was really getting into it, but then the demo time limit expired.

Today is the last day of the sale, so I'll probably pick it up. Otherwise, I'd probably get sick of playing the short demo and not be able to hold out for the next sale.
