Oh god, my self-birthday presents are going to drain my bank account. Too many deals.

Damn, I shouldn't be spending any money on games at the moment, but Sins of a Solar Empire looks right up my alley. I got bioshock from steam ages ago to avoid the securom.

I want to slap everyone that bitches about Securom. It is NOTHING...NOTHING...NOTHING. It's not spyware. You are not being tracked. They upped the number of installs to like 10 per game now. YOU CAN INSTALL BIOSHOCK TEN TIMES with no problems. After that, you just need to call a 1-800 # to activate it. Honestly, what is the problem? Why would anyone need to install a single copy of the game ten times unless they are pirating it?

Nice dichotomy in philosophies. Sins has zero copy protection. Bioshock's is ridiculous.

Lack of customer punishing DRM has not hurt Sins sales at all.

One welcomes, the other almost forces you to take a trip to town in South america called Juarez.

Great prices though, nice deal.

If games without any DRM shatter PC sales records, companies will notice the link.

But, I doubt Solar Empire will shatter any sales records. (not that it is a bad game, but if it was going to, it would have already done so)

Ya, I cant believe Sins is already $25.

And even with SecuROM, Bioshock is fantastic.

You have a 30-day price-matching guarantee, I believe. If they follow the guarantee like they are supposed to (slim chance), you should pocket 110% of the difference.

I considered buying it from Best Buy for $20 when their sale started last week, but an "insider" on another deal site told me that it would be $15 at Circuit City the next week (this week). I still considered buying @ BB and price-matching to CC to get 110% of the difference, but that seemed like too much hassle. I waited, and directly price-matched to CC to get it for $15, earning some RewardZone points.

Can you please shed a few words about Secure ROM? I will probably be getting this game but I just want to see if Secure ROM actually will affect me or is it just people making noise about DRM that will not affect anyone in the least (which is usually the case). I remember a while back there was DRM that gave you hell if you had a program that could mount an ISO but that never affected me because I never had such a program.

Daemon-Tools is one such program, that is considered an ABSOLUTE NECESSITY for a gamer like me.

SecuROM alone would have been fine. With Bioshock, the publisher did EVERYTHING THEY COULD to ruin the PC experience.

The publishers say that piracy is killing PC gaming, but it's really publishers like the one that published Bioshock that are killing PC gaming!

The XBOX 360 version:
You buy it, you own it.
You can play it on any XBOX.
You can play from within multiple profiles on a single XBOX.
You can lend your copy to someone to play while you are not using it.
You can rent a copy if you please.

The PC version:
You *must* install to the hard drive.
You *must* enter a CD-KEY.
You *must* activate over the Internet.
-You are restricted in the number of activations.
-For each Windows user account on the same system that accesses the game, you must use another activation token from your limited set.
-If the activation servers are down when you uninstall the game (you will never know), you don't get your activation token back.
-If your system fails and no longer boots, requiring Windows to be reinstalled, you will not get your activation token back. This has already happened to me once with this game.
-If you uninstall from a system with multiple users, you will only get one activation token back. There is no way to regain the activations that were wasted on the additional user accounts.

-On top of it all, the #$%ing game *STILL* REQUIRES THE DAMN DISC!

If SecuROM is to be included along with the over-bearing CD-KEY+required activation, it should at least allow users to play from the disc without wasting storage on game content...but it does not allow you to play from the disc. Furthermore, playing from the disc with SecuROM should let you play without requiring a CD-KEY; just like any game on XBOX (or Halo 2 on PC).

The original disc should *NEVER* be required for ANY product that uses Internet activation! Required Internet activation negates the need for ANY other form of copy protection. GOT IT, PUBLISHERS?

Fortunately, Daemon-Tools allows me to mount a mini-image to a virtual DVD-ROM drive. I have my Windows Vista Games Explorer window configured for most of my games so that I can right-click on the game icon and choose "Mount" before launching the game. Of course, most people couldn't get it set up that way, and it's still not as elegant as not requiring the disc in the first place.

I don't recall, but some of my games won't run with a mounted mini-image until I remove drive letter assignments for both of my physical optical drives.

@#$% copy protection, and @#$% PC publishers who ruin it for everyone.

I have Alcohol 52% installed (virtual drive) and two optical drives - Bioshock runs flawlessly. Just make sure to get the worldwide 1.1 update instead of the USK/German one. :p

If you use programs like Windows Process Explorer or virtual drives then it will affect you.

Lots of people had problems when the game first came out. The topic got thousands of posts at their forums.

Daemon-Tools Lite is freeware and pretty damn good. It has been around for much longer than Alcohol's virtual drive and is frequently updated. The only problem is the fact that there is now a non-freeware version, so the freeware has some stuff that you'll want to carefully decline (twice) while installing; such as "Let Daemon Search be your default Search Provider in IE."

I used to run Daemon Tools - I like Alcohol, though..I have the free version.

Because it won't work. Apparently that's for the censored version...the game launches, but the main menu says it's version 1.0. If you try to start a new game, it won't get past the loading screen.

I was unable to play Bioshock when it came out because I have an ATI X800Pro card that only support Shader Model 2.0B and not 3.0 as required. After doing some reading today, I could not resist and purchased the game.

I am able to run the game after following the instructions and downloads here:

http://www.paolofranchini.com/.../viewtopic.php?f=1&t=5

and

http://www.paolofranchini.com/...iewtopic.php?f=1&t=333

Both AOH4.5 and FlintsAOH-Mod_v4.64 seem to work fine. I'm up through two levels and only noted one glitch in some floor textures. Load times are acceptable. The game is entirely playable on my system (Epox PCA3+ with P4EE 3.4Ghz, 2GB Ram, and VisionTek X800Pro card) at 1024x768.

Of course it would be better if 2K did this patch, they only sold about a gizillion copies...

I do plan to upgrade my system this year but this is really the only thing that I have wanted to play that I needed newer hardware. The game is pretty with this hack. I can't wait to see it when I get my new uber system.

Also, Sins of a Solar Empire is fantastic and highly recommended. To paraphrase one of the reviews I've read, it is the only game since Homeworld that I thought I had only played until midnight and it turned out to be 3:30am - it is that engrossing.
