Conquering the blight of involuntary death.

Immortality Institute: FORUMS

MPrice: The Methuselah Mouse Price
The Methuselah Mouse Prize is the premiere effort of The Methuselah Foundation; a scientific competition designed to draw attention to the ability of new technologies to slow and even reverse the damage of the aging process, preserving health and wisdom in a world that sorely needs it.

MPrice: Why aging?
Because saving lives is the most valuable thing anyone can spend their time doing, and since over 100,000 people die every single day of causes that young people essentially never die of, you'll save more lives by helping to cure aging than in any other way.

Longevity Meme
What is healthy life extension? Put simply, it is utilizing science to increase healthy life span and reduce the risk of suffering age-related conditions in later life. It is the use of the best present day methods, while supporting research to develop more effective methods for tomorrow.

Cool, mine too. It is my main interest in life. I plan on becoming an M.D. / Ph.D. and help research a cure for aging.

I'd like to choose when to die, yes, I'd probably like to live for around 500 years. I think after a certain point, you start to forget who you are, your brain just can't keep track anymore. So while your body is still healthy, you've essentially forgotten who you are, and you have no past. I couldn't live with that.

I kind of like the method the late Robert Heinlein advocated in his Future History: The Howard Foundation was dedicated to extending human life by approaching the problem from the point of view of breeding animal stock. They would match men and women together on the criteria that they would have long-lived parents/grandparents, and keep track of all of the lines of lineage thus created over generations, working toward optimizing this trait.

Assuming I didn't go senile or crazy, I think the benefits of immortality would outweigh the disadvantages, for me.

The whole point of biological immortality is to live healthy, indefinite lifespans.

but since we can't all live that long, do we really want George Bush and Pope Benedict to reign for 10,000 years? :p

Georgy boy will be gone in 08' thankfully, and if benedict reigns for 10000 years, the prophecy will be fulfilled about him being the last pope.

But there can only be one. Benedict will send his assassin to kill GW and reign for 10,000 years.

Interesting stuff by Webster -

Main Entry: Assassin
Pronunciation: &-'sa-s&n
Function: noun
Etymology: Medieval Latin assassinus, from Arabic hashshAshIn, plural of hashshAsh one who smokes or chews hashish, from hashIsh hashish
1 capitalized : one of a secret order of Muslims that at the time of the Crusades terrorized Christians and other enemies by secret murder committed under the influence of hashish

I want to live long enough to see what the future has to bring, perhaps travel to another planet, see the universe...

Don't want to be a "party pooper", but everyone's got to go at sometime, if for no better reason than to give the younger generation space to breathe and flourish ;)

Our progenies will carry on our genes, and as such, in a sense, we will live forever :)

Our genes are not US (it's like saying that humens are chimpanzee, and we share 98% of u'r genes with them)

I feel that it's necessary to voice my opinion on this subject since this topic comes up repeatedly in different forms.

Considering your other post on God, it seems that you are really afraid of death, like most atheists. You seem to believe that death is oblivion. That's not true. Is it? Do you know for sure?

Where does the mind go after death? It has to exist somewhere, in some form. Your consciousness can't fade into a void. Otherwise, dreams have no basis.

Following this train of logic, death leads to eternal oblivion. Not a very heartening outcome. Isn't it more encouraging then, to have faith in God. I would take the latter over the former anyday of the week.

Well, if God doesn't exist or in other words, heaven and hell don't exist, then I have wasted my life worshiping a non-entity. Not true. Such a life gives one purpose, meaning, order and direction. Most importantly, hope. That is something exclusive for people who have faith.

What if you wake up one day and discover that heaven and hell do exist. That leaves you in a position that is entirely hopeless. God, if He is just, then, can't treat you the same as someone who has spent his/her whole life in His sincere worship and devotion. Why not be on the safe side?

Pssst our genes regulate the production of the amino acids that provide the building blocks of what we are, and

You can't honestly say that our children (progeny) is as far removed from us as that of the chimpanzee.

Your genes are what make yourself a human being instead of a worm or jellyfish, and while

it's true that we share about 98% of our genes with chimps, we also share 96% of our genes with rats.

Try again. ;)
