Bing Marketing

I can't even remember the number of TV commercials I'v seen for Bing. Ok, normal for an M$ product.

But then, while browsing an Anandtech review, I looked at the ads...

ADVERTISEMENTS

I laughed quite hard. All three visible ads, "USE BING!"

The sad part is, despite this massive marketing attempt, google is still the better search engine. (Not to mention the better and cleaner looking frontend)

My point is this, companies have no idea how to market their products.

And what makes you able to determine this? Obviously, MS knows how to market their products based on their history and client-base.

And it didn't work.

and yet here you are advertising bing some more.

microsoft > you

I'm attacking them for using advertising instead of creating a better product.

I love that commercial. It really gets the message across about information overload from a search engine and how it can be difficult to find what you're looking for.

I disagree with you on the fundamental basis that bad press is, in fact, NOT better then no press.

Thats odd, because the Bing page looks terribly bloated and ugly to me. (Compared to the clean look of Google)

this is why you are not in advertising

Bing's also got some Hulu event coming up I think...I was watching some TV show last Friday during lunch and saw the commercial at least 3 times 😛

that part pretty much advertises itself

The commercial, where people are using words out of context... is pretty creative, I thought it was pretty good message.

been doing my daily search engine usage today, comparing same searches on both sites, and it seems Google still has the better results about 60% of the time, but in those cases, Bings results are either close or near identical. The other 40% of the time, Bing has good results, and Google totally missed the mark. Which actually supports the message in the TV commercial.

Yup...I can't imagine how much cash they are putting into this effort...it must be a record for something like this.

As in, marketing your product should = making it better.

That's not the point of marketing at all. Marketing is so that a customer will think of you first and foremost and building brand recognition.

As a consumer, you shouldn't base purchases on what product comes to mind first, but rather, which is best.

How it looks is opinion based, I wouldn't use appearance to support my argument of one being better than the other when their functionality is the same(Of course that's perfectly fine for saying you like one or the other better). When it comes to how well they actually work, there are pros and cons to both. I don't understand the reasoning behind people saying Bing is flat out worse than Google. I've used Bing a handful of times since it came out and I didn't notice anything so blatantly bad that I could just say that Google is better. Bing has some nice things going for it, such as the image search and video search. A page that loads and streams as you scroll down is so much nicer than the page implementation Google has. I do like the mouse over videos as well.

I'd wager that the main reason people aren't switching is because they're lazy and or accustomed to Google already. Even if Bing was better, that would still be the case. If people used neither and had an option to use either from the get go, I imagine it would be much closer to 50/50 when it comes to the opinion of the two.

I found bing pretty great for browing free porn.

So, what you use it for, they didn't advertise? That seems to support my point.

Sure, but now Jon Doe, who has never heard of bing before, now sees this thread, and discovers that bing is useful for browsing porn

thus, "bad publicity" = you make post about it > no publicity.

Then you will never get the point of marketing because that is not how consumers base their decisions at all.

You praising Bing is good publicity, so you're completely wrong?

So, your point is consumers buy what comes to their minds first, not which is best?

In this case most people never would have tried Bing, it being a new product and all.

Marketing for Bing to raise the awareness of it makes perfect sense.
