Agreed. A well armed citizenry does a lot to discourage punks like that from taking over areas.

There's parts of nearby Georgia where gun ownership is MANDATORY, and crime there is VERY LOW.

Mandatory? Do they do inspections to make sure that you have a gun?

Ever read crime statistics for England and Australia versus Switzerland?

I'm no gun expert (far from it), but I think that a shot gun blast from far away isn't as effective as a closeup gut blast.

Might have been the load he was using..... not enough shot or too far away...

My favorite is #4 buck. Police like #00 buck, but it's only effective for a narrow width, but has longer range.

Yeah, but if he had been close up they would hae been split in half.

LOL at this whole thread :p Can't say I like the results - I don't like people being shot, even if they do deserve it - but I have to admire this guy. I'm glad the police decided to look the other way. Hell, they were probably all rooting for him...

If they were 20 - 25 feet away, the shot spreads out. Thus, they were hit with a very small number of pellets. At close range, all three of them would've been fskced.

What it comes down to, in my opinion, is this .. The guy should not be trying to kill people in his front yard, it's attempted murder. It's illegal. Period. It's NOT okay to start firing for multiple reasons. BUT, if I were in the same situation I would have responded the same way, and I don't fault him in any way(except for the fact that he's breaking the law) for it. My ethical/lawful side says it was very wrong, my compassionate/understanding side wants to buy the guy a drink. What he did was wrong .. but obviously the cops aren't going to bust him for it (article said he wasn't going to be charged) so it looks like he may have at least laid down the law a little.

If they were actively engaged in having a shootout on his front yard, he was well within his rights to defend himself. F$% those bastards.

This also demonstrates why a shotgun is the best home defense weapon bar none.

it was in self-defense though...a stray bullet could have come into the house and hit him or his wife. His wife even said that their granddaughter came close to being hit once

the lawful side of me says it was wrong because it was against the law, but i can't see how you can ethically be against this. he and his family were in danger of losing their lives, and he did what was necessary to protect him and his family. it's not like he could have asked them nicely to stop.
