Stumpjumper hardtail mountain bike. Many funs on our local singletrack :)

cRaZy wintertime mongrel bike. Actually, this one's been upgraded to a different frame and fork, but serves the same role. YouTube video of some typical winter riding :Q

Soma Smoothie ES all-purpose road bike. This is my go-to bike for road training and fast commuting. In the summer it sheds its fenders. Not a great sprinter, due to its long chainstays.

'00 Schwinn Paramount. This is a high-end steel bike, sitting at the 18-pound mark, with a decent ride and a very stiff bottom bracket. This season, my teammates talked me into winning a State Championship road race on it. C'mon guys, can't I just hold the STOP/SLOW sign at the corner? :p

I've never ridden a bike with disk brakes. I'd really like to try it sometime just to know what it feels like!

Please tell me you don't actually use that cable lock though!?!

Disk brakes are nice, especially in the rain. The stopping power is phenomenal. As for the cable lock..only used at work and sparingly when I go to the grocery store. I know, I need something beefier. What's the recommendation? I want something secure but don't want the weight of a u-lock.

I'd like to see one of your bikes beneath my Impreza with how every shit ass biker rides in Portland.

Seriously, I got cut off today by an old lady on a bike and was given the finger while she rode through a stop sign.

After consulting with a pro cyclist friend, we agreed that this would be a good starter bike for me:

Those are nice bikes. I helped a friend of mine assemble a Motobecane Le Champion he purchased from Bikes Direct last summer.

Let me know if you have any questions on putting it together.

This is the bike I used to race while I was a young man. I still have it, but I tend to ride my mountain bike more now than the road bike.

Before

After

I constructed the bike myself from hand picked parts, including buying a box of spokes, hubs and rims to construct the wheels.

I was gonna buy the Cafe Latte....but the i found the Jamis Allegro 1 for $420. My only regret is not realizing that the Allegro was 16 speed. Other than that, it is a nice bike. I wish there was a place I could try the Cafe Latte....

Yea, take pride in wanting to kill one of us for what someone else has done to you. Have you ever actually had a logical thought in your lifetime?

Get out of the thread moron.

Make sure you only ride it on the roads, though. :)

I saw a Motobecane cross-country bike frame snap in half after taking it off a small jump.

If you changed the summary to state "cyclists" instead of "bikers," then it would be more obvious of which you're speaking.

I personally have a 13-year-old KHS mountain bike that I've taken really good care of. I added a Rock Shox Judy XC, clipless pedals, and Mavic Crosslink wheels. Recently I had to replace the brakes and shifters and went with XT V-brakes. I rarely get out mountain biking these days (mostly crummy, unkempt, 40-mile-away trails around here), so I stuck some 1.25" wide slicks on the Crosslinks. I can move along pretty well on it.

I don't have any good pics of it, so I'll have to post some later.

Well, as far as I'm concerned, there isn't anything much more secure than a U lock. I like the smaller style because I can just toss it in my back pocket and it's there whenever I get where I'm going. As a plus, it's small size makes it hard to get a tool into the U bolt to break it open. The only downside of the small locks, however, is you can't lock your wheels to something. I'm not all that worried about it though because my wheels aren't anything special and they don't have quick release hardware on them.

I've always used Kryptonite locks myself.

Hey buddy. I've got an idea! Find the nearest cliff and drive that Impreza of yours off of it as fast as possible. Portland has the highest percentage of people that bike to work, coming in ahead of Minneapolis by just a little bit every year. Some of those people will ride dangerously but it's unfair to apply that stereotype to everyone. Kinda like there are some really asshole car drivers out there like yourself, but then again, there are a lot of really nice ones too...

ah. good to know. I guess I won't be doing any Double Pits to Chesty runs on this thing then.

My Surly LHT all decked out for a tour

It's a wee bit outdated, because I've switched to some Ortliebs for the rear panniers, but I gotta say the surly LHT deserves all the praise it gets. The frame is nothing fantastic, but the components you get for under a Grand is pretty awesome.

Your talking about bicycles or Harleys?

I have a 12 speed, Miyata road bike. Nothing fancy, not thief bait. I have it fixed up with a basket on the back, mounted on a pletscher rack (aluminum rack). The basket is designed to hang on the handlebars, but I removed the brackets and attached it to the back rack with my custom made fittings, pretty simple stuff. This makes it possible to just drop my pack, shopping, lock, etc. into the basket, way more convenient than what almost everybody else does. Also, little windage.

I didn't do any work on the bike for a few years but the last month or so have done a lot, replacing the back wheel, freewheel, some spokes, trued the rim some (spoke tensions), all without spending a penny (from saved parts). It could use a new freewheel and chain, but I'll wait until I'm experiencing problems. Right now the friction shifting is working fine, I just can't get the indexed shifting working. No biggie. I've started riding the hills again, is the reason I've started working on it again. For city runabout, it was fine but I need more confidence for hilly bike tripping. My favorite is skating, though...

I always do my own mechanical work on my bike (and skates). I prefer 1 3/8 inch tires on my 27 1/4" wheels, but my front wheel now is a Continental Top Touring 1 1/4" that I've had on there for over 10 years! I keep polyurethane liners in my tires, larger ones than recommended (width wise). I glue them to the center of the tires with contact cement. I rarely get flats, therefore. Even so, I make a habit of always carrying a spare tube, a tube repair kit and have a cheap pump with me (securely taped to the frame, and I carry a knife to cut the tape in case I need the pump... which I haven't for quite a few years).

I'm a devilishly good bike rider with a lot of experience.
