My Dad has a 95 Impala SS... looks like a regular big old Chevy car (or an undercover cop!) unless you notice the badging.

The 'vette engine really hauls in it, though! And RWD is harder to master than FWD.

"possibly a sleeper" story

This morning my surge strip decided to stop delivering power to my alarm clock, so in a rush to make it to work I was driving my dad's truck (my car's in the shop), this truck is about 8' tall and a bit over 3 tons, diesel, and was doing over 85MPH down the highway, would've been faster except traffic sucks.

God I'm glad there was no cops in the area (getting a radar reading would've been cake)

Edit: A hell, to tell the truth the whole point was to bump it up to see more possibilities (although the story was true), and calling a BMW a sleeper is like calling a silver ingot low key.

there's a shop up in the northeast somewhere that for like 5k, will take a late model volvo 7 or 9 series, pull out the engine, drop in a mustang 5.0 and tranny and do some suspension work on it and get rid of all the rattles. that is what i call a sleeper....

b/f my old volvo got totalled, i was thinking about having that done...damn would that have been a fun car to drive around:)

We're talking stock cars (no mods) right? If so, me and mAdD INDIAN are on the same mindset. M5 looks like a freakin boat cuz it's *huge*! However, step down to a regular 5series w/auto and that'll be a sleeper too!
M3 looks like a racer so I would disqualify it...and yes, bmw's image of a performance car might not qualify any bimmer as a sleeper.
The new gen Maximas are only good w/5sp and on the roll. My bro's 5sp is pretty sweet (especially after his power mods...no appearance mods to date.) However, take this whale to Willow Springs or any other track and it'll get squashed in stock form!
Isn't the Spirit in stock form just an OK performer? I've seen pics of some nicely modded ones at the track.

M5 huge? Try a mid 70's full sized Ford LTD. My grandparents had a 4 dr. with a 460. Yes, that was stock. Or go back a little further and get a Caddy with the 502. Yep, 8.2 Liters of fun.:D

'00 Sentra SE: 145 HP, 0-60 in 7.9 seconds (I think thats what motortrend said).

'00 Maxima (same as '01): 222 horsepower, 0-60 in 6.7 seconds for 5 spd, top speed of 140+ mph. Even the '95 will do 0-60 in 7.1 seconds with 190-192 horsepower. They look like real sleepers - more than the current ones - and are quite fast! The old '95 GXE's especially look like a sleeper with the plastic hubcaps.

Mid-90's Sentra SE-R is similiar to the current ones but older and really doesn't look like its as fast as it is.

I am going to say that an ECHO is also a sleeper. Look how damn fugly they are. Also extremely cheap and yet they do 0-60 in 8.5 seconds. Not excellent, but I think its safe to call them the sleeper of the econoboxes.

One of the all-time certified sleepers was the 1963 Pontiac Grand Prix/Catalina 2+2 line. (Some of the other old-timers will remember them!) Had a 421 Super Duty and 4 speed. Held the Motor Trend 0-60 record for over 20 years, beating the late 60 and early 70's muscle cars. Remember, this was MT's figures.....

Actually the 94-96 Maximas w/ 5spd are faster than the 2000 Maxima with 5spd cause its much lighter. Also, a 5spd Maxima in GXE form can potentially beat the same model year Maxima in SE or GLE form cause they are more heavier.

A true sleeper would be a 95 Maxima GXE with a 5spd.

Also the older Sentra SE-Rs are faster than the current Sentra SE eventhough they have the same horsepower. The older Sentra SE-Rs are lighter than the 2001 Sentra SE, however they are uglier too.. Many people also put in the turbocharged version of the engine in the Sentra, giving it MUCH more power...which makes it a sleeper (unless the same people put large and retarded stickers on it)

1995 Nissan Maxima GLE
190 hp & 3100 lbs. (Source: theautochannel.com)

2000 Nissan Maxima GLE
222 hp & 3199 lbs. (Source: edmunds.com)

I'd take 32hp over 100 lbs any day of the week. Even though the new Maxima is "more heavier" than the older one it wouldn't lose to a 1995.

Vialman: If you check the 0-60 numbers for the 94-96 Maxima 5spd, you'll see that the 0-60 time for it is 6.6 seconds, while the 0-60 time for the 2000 Maxima 5spd is 6.7 seconds.

issue# 0-60 1/4mi @ Year
C&D 1/96 6.6 15.2 93 95 SE 5sp
MT 2/95 6.6 15.2 92 95 SE 5sp
-- this was taken from MaxFAQs Click on History, and then Stock Performance.

Therefore the 95 Max is slightly faster than the 2000 Max. Also the ideal shift points for the 2000 Max is past the rev limiter, therefore you cannot use the power to its full potential.

I'm gonna have to say my car is a nice sleep, infiniti j30t. Its pretty much a 4 dr Nissan 300zx with a nice interior. It uses the same engine, transmision, suspension, and rear end as a 300zx

Plus I have the quietest Flowmasters on the market so it doesn't even sound mean... just looks like a slow full size truck.

All the times I've seen for the '95 Maxima SE 5 spd are 7.1 sec. Since the GXE is minorly lighter I can give it an optimistic 7.0, But the new SE's do 6.7, again since the GXE is lighter perhaps its down to 6.6...Also the '95, not the '94 was the first year of that generation.

This is one source

Not a great source but I had read 7.1 in the past - its saying a bit more than that for the SE here. THe people at forums.maxima.org will know more :) I checked your link its weird...those mags don't agree on anything! AM (?) gave the '95 GXE a 6.6 0-60 and Road & Track gave the SE a 7.4!

THe link you supplied I never realized the '92-94s had so much horsepower ;P

impulse My mom has a '93 J30t that I take out on occasions. It's fast as hell, but the car's pretty heavy (~3500lbs), but it still hauls ass =)

I know a guy with a plain-looking (I think it has primer on it) Ford Ranger with a turboed 4-cylinder that runs 11.79 in the quarter. That is the best sleeper I have ever come across.
