True that Alcohol is a pretty destructive drug when abused. Mary Jane, Cocaine, Meth, LSD, Heroin, SOMA, may serve to calm the populace without alcohol's destructive influence.

mmmm, Heroin.

cops have been quoted forever as saying they would rather arrest a marijuana user than an alcoholic

Legalizing drugs and the war on drugs itself are two very very different things. Legalizing drugs would probably change the price structure significantly and reduce the amount of crime associated with its distribution.... However, I'm not sure I'm thrilled with the idea of things like heroin, cocaine, crack etc all being legally sold over the counter just like a aspirin. That's a whole other conversation though.

The war on drugs effort itself is of course doomed to fail because people will always find a way to do those things regardless of their legal status, but the criminal violence associated with drugs has been cut down significantly over the last 2 1/2 decades, as per FBI stats.

Regardless of the reason for their existence and legalization of drugs etc, these are some seriously seriously bad guys. They don't think twice about slaughtering innocent people to send a message to someone. It's a good thing to see them taken out.

Step back and open your mind a little bit.

In the 60's and 70's in Florida, cocaine might as well have been legal. The cops and judges were all bought and paid for... Just another cost of doing business for the cartels. They operated without fear of prosecution. This is the closest analog we have to openly legalizing drugs. Sure, coke wasn't technically legal so it's not a perfect comparison... But what's the difference between legal and being able to do whatever you want without fear of legal consequence?

Operating without fear of prosecution is not anywhere close to the impact full legalization would have. Once the pharmaceutical companies get license to produce drugs to FDA purity standards and they are made available legally and at less cost than organized crime can provide them at the game is up. The cartel's money sources would dry up in short order and they would quickly fall apart.

You don't see liquor distributors shooting it out over turf or buying judges.

Stolen? What are you talking about? Nothing was stolen. Plus, who cares about crime stats outside the US? The ones that matter to me are the ones here.

Fool. That is the second step of the plan. What do you think cartels are going to do once drugs are legalized? Go legit? You are a fool if you think so. They are criminals and will continue to operate criminal enterprises. They must be slaughtered without mercy. Everyone knows this.

Uh, take away the money, and the organization falls apart. The people don't work for free.

This is what happened after prohibition: most of the criminal infrastructure disapperd ad joined the legal economy. There were elements - organized crime that had largely been created by the big bucks in illegal alcohol - that looked for new markets, loan sharking, protection, drug dealin, gambling, prostitution - but that dosn't apply nearly as much to the modern drug cartels, who can hardly 'convert industries' much.

drug users are responsible for illegal drug traffic and the death of innocents, not the war on drugs.

legalizing narcotics has been tried many times, China, Amesterdam..it doesn't work because drug users are narcissistic POS who don't give a shit about anything but themselves. That isn't a model that leads to a productive society.

Neither is your assignment of blame. Say you're 100% right - it doesn't do a lot to solve anything.

That's where some pragmatism - say, things like free drug rehab - might be more useful.
