Nvidia PR +1

AMD PR 0

RotFL

Now did AMD actually think NV would do nothing and let HD6850/6870 beat up on GTX460 768/1GB? They should have expected some response.

It's going to be a lot more interesting to see reviews of HD6850 vs. GTX460 1GB and HD6870 vs. GTX470. I still think AMD has a good lineup based on additional features and lower power consumption. I bet with overclocking the HD6850 can even beat the 470.

I like the sound of this price war ... fight fight!

The actual cuts are:

NVIDIA has cut prices of two key SKUs, the GeForce GTX 460 1 GB and GeForce GTX 470:

* GeForce GTX 460 1GB: US $199; €169 including VAT
* GeForce GTX 470: US $259; €219 including VAT
.

Boo. $199? I'll wait till they get lower so I can get another for SLI. Or I may go for 6870... we'll see the numbers later tonight.

Oh can't wait!

I'm kinda worried that just one 6-pin connector will limit its OCing potential.

Yeah it would be 6870 vs 470. so it will be either 100W less power, less heat (im guessing), quieter vs physx and cuda. 3d vision doesnt count anymore.

Good times ahead.

Does it really only have 1 power connector? If that's true then maybe AMD wants to limit overclocking so as not to cannibalize 6870 sales?

Just saw the leaked benchmarks. Wow the 6850 is impressive.

Yes, AMD is using that as a PRO, many people have a quandary supplying even 1 6 pin, never mind 2.
IMO, its a smart subtle way to differentiate the two cards.
More so than the 5850/5870
Where many o/c 5850 for 5870 performance.

I've had it with AMD drivers! I don't care about the cost difference for a comparative products between AMD and NV. A $20, $30 difference will mean jacksheet if I'm having horrible time with drivers.

Besides, I think CUDA and Physx is sexy ^_^

Some 6850s will ship with dual 6pin adapters like ASUS TOP.

Ok but it's not that simple. You can get EVGA + free games with NV cards. So unless you go with XFX, there are other factors involved like lifetime warranty, 90 day step up, etc.

Also, an overclocked GTX460 consumes more power than a GTX470. That didn't stop GTX460 owners from overclocking the their cards and for factory pre-overclocked GTX460s from flying off the shelves.

Let's wait for official benchmarks, esp. DX11 performance differences. Maybe HD6870 will even be faster than the GTX470 and HD5870.

Hehehehei said I might but not anymore:

nVidia PR +1

AMD PR 0

apoppin over 9000

i meant Nvidia PR "won" just by getting you to consider their video card instead of waiting.

This is PR at a much higher level than in the past; both AMD and Nvidia.

As i predicted, it is going to be a very (very) interesting 6 months

About time. It's been a very (very) dull year with only AMD playing.

With GTX470s dipping to $200 or possibly below for black friday I'm seriously tempted to get one. Only the need for a beefier PSU than my EA500 would stand in the way.

you would hope so since my gtx 460 768 @ 905/4400 is ~ gtx 470 and I've seen several people run theirs at significantly higher speeds than that.

@v8envy: what else is in your rig that an ea500 wouldn't handle the load? gtx 470 isn't that bad on power, unless you're running an i7 @ 4.0+ and lots of hd's you're probably ok.

Overclocked GTX460s don't exist to AMD because their cards will also overclock another 30%.

But in all seriousness, it makes it very difficult to compare HD6850 vs. GTX460 because you can buy a GTX460 clocked at 675 or 850mhz....all shall be revealed in less than a day.

I am closely watching too.My next video card purchasing decision will make or break with how this aspect turns out.I still get the impression that there will be middleware, monitor compatibility and possible native blue-ray 3d to figure out in any definitive way with AMD.Here's one snippet from a monitor i have eyes on.

Hahahah wooops the hd6870 is barely able to overclock in the beyond3d review (~55mhz or so).

YMMV?

I seem to remember reading a 4890 review (don't remember which one) that showed off pretty poor OCing numbers, which was the opposite experience I had with my 4890.

That being said, we really can't say whether all 6870s are poor OCers until we see more reviews and consumer reports.

This is terrible news for those of us whose CPUs can't really make use of a new card anyway (and who can't afford a CPU/motherboard upgrade)!

All these cheap cards that one can't really gain any benefit from!

Am I likely to get any benefit at all upgrading to any of these from an 8800gt if I only have a 5600 athlon64 x2 CPU? Or is it new PC or nothing?

If you want to play games that use DX 10/11 or OpenGL 3/4 then yes, the new cards will fit the bill. If you are not going to do anything but using a e-mail client and stuff like that, then don't bother.
