I think EA finally has some sports game compeitition. I really like NHL2k3 better than NHL2003.. its more realistic... not as many fancy features but better. NBA2k3 and NFL2k3 are also excellent games.
DOAXVB got a bad review on Gamespot, 6.0 or something like that.
I played it for about 5 minutes last night. great graphics, but now sure how long the novelty will last. It seems kinda cheesy... earning money to buy different swimsuits and stuff.
I can't comment on either NBA2k3 or NHL2k3, as I've never played either of them (or earlier titles in those series).
However, I can comment on NFL2k3. In my opinion, although the presentation and game graphics are certainly nice, the gameplay has taken a nosedive since the Dreamcast days. I'm guessing the reason why it's received so many positive reviews is that most of the problems aren't evident right away -- they're more subtle, and you don't really notice most of them until you really get into the game.
I owned & played NFL2k and 2k1 religiously, so I do have some perspective. I don't know what happened this year, but they ruined a lot of things in the game. For example, if a receiver is hit immediately after catching the ball, he will drop it the vast majority of the time, regardless of how good he is or how high you set the "catching" slider in the AI adjustments. While playing a game against a friend of mine, both teams had over 15 drops apiece!
Simulated games usually have incredibly high scores -- I started a franchise with 8:00 quarters, and about 80% of the teams were averaging over 30 points per game. About half were averaging 40+ points.
One of my favorite plays, the draw, does not work at all in that game. Meanwhile, out patterns are unstoppable more often that not. You MUST rifle short passes -- lobbed short passes float ridiculously.
I played NFL2k3 for about a month. I've since sold it and bought Madden.
