Isn't this just a great part of a console's life? When the games finally start to come down in price and you can drop $20 and get a hidden gem, or a game you've been wanting to try? It gets fun like that around the end of the system's life, too.

I've been catching up on a few Xbox titles lately. Most of the Gamecube games I've wanted have been purchased right when they came out, since they were too good to postone buying. You say Soccer Slam is fun, eh? Hmmmm.....

Well, Sega hasn't actually abandoned the cube, but they did more or less stop their future Sega Sports support. But even EA sports said they were struggling on the console.

I heard Sega may be selling off their sports team totally , so no more sega sports for any system..... (Visual Concepts) Microsoft may be the buyer, or 989 sports...

That was just a rumor started by Ign

Yes, it's a shame that Sega has all but abandoned the Cube, but I think that the Gamecube by design is intended to be a budget system. If Sega can't hang with that, then good riddance to them. I did however pick up NBA and NFL 2K3, because they are worth $15.

I don't think the GC is designed to be a budget system the GBA on the hand is designed to perform that role. Nintendo's strategy has always been to make the Hardware as cheap as possible and then charge handsomely for software. This time around thinngs are a lot more competitve so you don't see Nintendo charging $60 for games like Zelda or Metroid Prime. If you took an average of the prices tor GC software vs. PS2 or Xbox you'll probably see that GC has the average price per title. Nintendo's Players' Choice titles are $29.99 as opposed to the $19.99 price on Platinum or Greatest Hits titles. I try to never buy games at full price and largely succeeded in that endeavor with Dreamcast and Xbox, but not with the GC.

The Dragoon:

It does look like even EA sports is struggling on GC, they seem to have discounted their games too, and I wouldn't be surprised if they pared back the sports title releases on GC in the future. I think the main problem is that people who want sports games are usually people who buy systems like PS2 of their own nature or are immediately steered by the Best Buy salesman to buy a PS2 when an interest in sports games is mentioned. Even more serious gamers with more than one system will more likely buy a sports game on Xbox if that is the second system just because of the whole online option. A lot of GC buyers just bought the system to get all the Nintendo goodies (Mario, Zelda, Star Fox, Pikmin, Animal Crossing, Metroid etc.), and have another system for everything else. I remember Sega published sales figures for its Sega Sports titles that showed that GC volume was 5% of the sum of the volume on the other 2 systems. I think given the sales figures it is a sound business decision to stop development on GC sports titles - those resources are better deployed elsewhere. One thing to remember though is that we cannot blame ourselves for not buying enough Sega Sports titles, Nintendo's market niche has just developed in this manner where sports title buyers just won't consider a Nintendo console for their sports games. It's just the nature of the beast in this video games market.

BTW, do you have Panzer Dragoon Orta?

Hey! Nice Gamecube thread. Here's my piece. Over at BestBuy, they are selling a Nyko 64MB memory card for $19.99. This memory is a LOT faster than the Nintendo memory. I use it with NCAA 2003 Football and my Dynasty saves used to take about a minute and a half. Now they get done in about 5 seconds. Whew that's fast. I combined it with the gamer's gift card coupon to get it for 14.99 + tax.

Great thread! Has anyone else gotten the free Ocarina of Time guidebook with their Ocarina of Time bonus discs? I picked mine up this past weekend from Funcoland and, much to my surprise, I recieved a free Ocarina of Time strategy guide. They claim it is a Gamestop exclusive. Anybody else encountered this?

Hey DNH,
I'll let you know if I get a guide as I ordered my Zelda game from Gamestop and they said they just shipped OoT. That would be kinda cool if I got a guide as a nice little suprise, although I've already played through OoT on the N64.

Regarding the Sega Sports rumor....it is a rumor, but I read about it long before IGN posted it. EGM posted it about a month ago. Sega Sports had a bad year in 2002, but it was their own fault. They were way too optimisitic on their numbers and anticipated on selling 1.5 million copies of NFL2K3. They knew EA would put up a good fight with Madden, but they still felt they could sell tons of copies of NFL2K3, so they pretty much made that many copies of the game. NFL2k3 only wound up selling about 500,000 copies. NFL2k3 didn't really sell all that well on any console, but the Gamecube had the smallest numbers, so they're trying to cut costs and only develop it now for the XBOX and PS2. Now, you're talking to a HUGE Sega Sports fan. I personally love NFL2k3 and enjoy it much more than Madden. I think it's pretty crappy that Sega Sports games are being taken off the cube and I don't blame anyone but Sega for this. Had they put on line access on the GC one, maybe it woulda sold better, and had their sales people made more realistic goals regarding sales for this year, they wouldn't be in the predicament their in.

All this talk about sports games..

Right now you can get current sports titles cheaper for the Gamecube than other systems, and you can get Gamecubes cheaper than other systems.

That makes sports games on the Gamecube a hot deal. now.

If 9 months from now some sports game comes out on the PS2 or xbox and not on the Gamecube, then buy one of those systems then. In the meantime enjoy current sports games on the Gamecube and enjoy the extra money in your pocket. now.

"only 500,000"

That used to be a landmark number, I think sega has in the last couple of years been a bit too optimistic. What do they expect when they compete with now the no.1 super hojillion EA its first time around? Although on the other hand nfl2k and 2k1 sold to about 25% of the entire console base of the dreamcast..

Hehe wow this started a little fiesty series of posts, much more than I woulda thought. You know what really irritates me about sports games? For the last 5 years weve all had to buy an extra memory card just to SAVE A FREAKING SEASON. So these sports games are in essence first run N64 prices (Shadows of the empire at 84.99 anyone? ) Well not THAT much

I think sega or any other game company who sucks the life out of a memory card should bundle one with their games, like animal crossing brilliantly did. No wonder xbox sells the most sports. theres an 8 gig memory card in there. Sports fans save 100$ in memory cards....

BTW although I personally love the GC above the other 2, I thank my lucky stars every night that I can get a first party nintendo title for 50$. Because they HAVE TO.. ahh sweet sweet competition saves me $$.

Oh one more point: I think nintendo has so many franchises and 1st party arrogance I wouldnt doubt in the near future they opt for a smaller slice of pie and just make a nintendo box, because 95%* of all nintendo owners buy the system to play zelda and mario anyways..

*Half-assed guess

----Now before this turns into an off topic thread hmm lets see find something good... OH KBKids has NBA2k3 for 30$ with free carrying case! wait no thats not good.. not unless you want a 15$ case.. Fireblade is 20$ even though I have never even heard of it.. Sonic Adventure 2 with free case for 30$ i think thats good..
And my personal fave:
Mary-Kate and Ashley: Sweet 16 - Licensed to Drive for retail price at 50$.. the developers are crying in their sleep, so openly selling out that they will roast in eternal hellfire..

I picked up a S-Video cable for the cube today at Target B&M for $7. It's $10 on the website. I'm still looking for component cables but no store seems to carry them besides Nintendo.com.

yeah, you can't get the component cables anywhere except nintendo. They pretty much intended it that way as they probably felt that wouldn't be a huge selling item, so no need to keep tons of stores across the country stocked with them. It's much easier for them to just take the orders directly and then they can monitor as to whether they're selling well so they can make more. I have the component cables and they are awesome. Metroid Prime is progressive scan just looks incredible. I highly recommending going onto Nintendo's site, biting the bullet and pick yourself up a set. Very sweet.

My local best buy has the component cables is very generic packaging, with a tag on top that says "official Nintendo replacement part"

The cables were $6.99 each, I believe.

Just picked up my Zelda bonus disc.

To my delight, NBA 2K3 was $14.99 in store also! Good thing I held off from buying online due to shipping costs, saved me $5.

I see a bunch of used Sega Soccer Slams everwhere for $29.99. I'm trying to hold off, still gotta pay $35 for the rest of Zelda. :p

I guess I'll go get the component cables from the Nintendo store. The S-Video cable is better than regular composite, clearer and sharper, but I'd like to see how the component is. It is a digital connection afterall.

Edit : Picked up my bonus disc at EB today too. Great game. Passed by my BB and Beach Spikers is back up to $29.99. :(

Hey spikey,
component cables aren't a digital connection, they're still analog. They'e just better quality analog as the signal isn't getting modulated and demodulated so many times.

"BTW, do you have Panzer Dragoon Orta?" Not yet actually, just PD, Zwei, and now Azel :).

A note on those expensive N64 and SNES games of ages past, they didn't overprice them just because they could, they priced them so high because Carts just cost more to produce, it was most apparent on N64 since they were competing against the cheap CDRoms of the PSX, but SNES had Zelda: LTTP for nearly $100 I think. The bigger the game is, the larger the cart has to be, and the more it costs to produce.
Here's to infinitely superior DVD!

Also about Component Cables: Most people don't think-for game consoles-that component is worth it, unless you have a digital TV where you can utilize prog scan. Analog Component usually doesn't hold a big advantage over S-Video with video game systems.

Unadvertised goodie-bag at Best Buy. I've been dragging my gaming systems to school regularly, and I'd usually just put them in a small backpack, so I've been shopping around for actual carrying cases. I saw one at Best Buy in a bag and noticed it was actually part of a deal. Buy a Cube and get a carrying case, Wavebird (!), and $50 coupon book.

Target in Fullerton, CA. I picked up the indigo/clear controller for $9.89 clearance (only one left though) and swiped that Zelda free disk when the guy wasnt looking. it rang up as $.01 at the front register and the cashier didnt say a thig about it. Theres about 10 left just sitting at the gaming counter....
