Thats pretty interesting, haven't heard that one before. How could you be sure it wasn't the other way around?

I am not. But if the PSU killed the HD, then I assume it would have taken other things with it, like the DVD, CDRW and/or mobo. Only the HD was burned.

Funny, seems like most people have had bad luck with Maxtor. I, on the other hand, have never had a problem with Maxtor. The other brand drive I have is Western Digital. However, when I first got that from NewEgg, it failed within a month. After going through the RMA process, I received another one and have not had a problem with it so for. That was 2 years ago.
