THe perf. vs. warranty question isn't too much of an issue. Most times if a HDD is gonna fail it will fail in the first year or so. If not it should last you a while...

working as a computer tech for about 2 years i've definately seen more maxtor's die than anything else. I've only seen one seagate go bad, and very few WD.

Seagate - older ones were very quite and reliable, but the new ones are loud from what I hear (but I'm sure reliability is still good), haven't had one die
Maxtor - older ones were loud, but I just got a DM10 and it is very quiet, I've seen an older one die, but I'm hoping this new one is OK
WD - quite fast overall, rather reliable in my experience, but their noise is enough to drive me up the wall - very high pitched and whiny, my Raptors are nice drives though
IBM (pre-Hitachi) - had a Deathstar die on me, but when it lived it was fast and fairly quiet, overall it wasn't bad save the horrid reliability, I hear that the newer Hitachi drives are OK though

Loud? I guess it's a definition. I've herd the .8 generation is a litter louder than the very quiet .7 gen, but definitely not loud...

Strange. I've used many WD Caviars, and they didn't have any high pitched whine any of them. Very quiet actually. I don't even consider my 10,000rpm 36GB raptor to be very noisy.

nice thread idea! bump because this will look awesome once there are a couple hundred votes and we can see just what most ppls preferences are! :)

see for one i didnt realize seagate was so popular and maxtor had so many unsatisfied customers... i thought WD and IBM would dominate those two categories, respectively...

I voted for Seagate, but I wanted to put in a good word for Hitachi as their SATA drive has worked great for me.

Hitachi with thier drives is like Abit with the caps. Once you have a big fvck up your QC goes way up to even try and earn a customer base again.

franguinho: Thanks! I'm happy to hear you like the idea of this thread.

Anyone had a Hitachi drive die yet? Although I guess there aren't many people at these forums that bought one ;)

Wow!

The average poller wants capacity, is indifferent to speed, wants long warranty, rarely defrags, and finds warranty less important than performance (despite claiming performance an important part of their buying decision).

I feel that either some of you are confused, or suffering from buyers, comfortable shoe sundrome. It's a syndrome that you bought something because it's popular, and will recomend it to others so long as it works for you, regardless of the facts.

If you claim that capacity is more important in one breath, but in another claim performance is more important perhaps a Psychologist is in order.....

I do tend to have fewer issues with Seagate, but have killed four WD HDD to date. I have lost only two Maxtor (due to Lightning, and power surge), and have VERY bad issues with older IBM HDD.

Hence my comment a couple posts ago

Was it a deskstar 60gxp or 75gxp? The Deathstar line?

Well i think a better question would be which manf have you had the least problems with. Seagates are VERY nice but WD have to be the most robust/fail safe drives i have ever used. I have never had one die on me, that includes the old 853mb HDD from my 486.

Personally i would put Seagate then WD.

Finally, i agree, nice poll.

I don't quite understand the poll. If I prefered WD over segate, that means I have ran more WD's HDDs . Which also means that I likely ran into more problems with WD because I'ved used them more since Hard Drives are always bound to have problems sooner or later.

"Is a long warranty more important than performance to you?'.

How about both from a Segate Barracuda?

Exactly. The more popular a particular brand, the more problems people will be reporting.

WD 74 GB Raptor. 10,000 RPM, 5 year warranty.

My 2 cents:

I was lucky to survive the IBM Deathstar series, matter of fact I have 3 drives that are 4+ years old, I bought 2 200 GB drives for my newest rig.

And, I am willing to bet that PRICE has more to do with decision-making than most of us would care to admit.

I have 1 Maxtor for about 3 years, still runs w/o problems. Then I had a newer Maxtor die a year ago. RMA'd it with about a week left under warranty, and the replacement drive failed the next month. Switched over to Samsung, with 3 year warranty, and it hasnt given me any problems so far.

Yes, you are right about that. But sometimes you have to choose. Like those who are looking for a high capacity drive and choosing between the Maxtor and Seagate. Diamondmax10 is faster, but Seagates have longer warranty.

I'm trying to gather information of what people think is most important. I don't say you always have to choose. Not everyone has the small, expensive 10,000rpm raptor as an alternative.

It seems rather odd that just Maxtor decides to reduce their warranties and yet now there are a lot of reports of their drives dying early (in comparison to other manufacturers, namely Seagate). Coincidence?

Yea, it definitely doesn't look good for Maxtor right now. Actually, I think I would even perfer Hittachi before Maxtor as it is now.

I'm surprised so few uses the Samsung drives. I've heard they are very silent and runs cool. I haven't heard much about the reliability though.

Today I for the first time saw a dead WD drive (WD1200). And not only was it dead, it is shorted somehow so it fried the PSU! Have any of you ever experienced this before? Also, when turning the hardrive quickly, I can hear something is loose inside. Also it smells awful from the spindel motor.

Thats pretty interesting, haven't heard that one before. How could you be sure it wasn't the other way around?
