I got so much response in my "Maxtor or Seagate" thread, so I thought these polls would be an interesting idea. I think they could function as a pretty good reference to those thinking about purchasing a new HD.

Tell me if you think I left something important out of the polls.

Thanks for contributing!

---------------

02/22 Edit: Consider not voting as the "none" or "other" alternative. For example, if you haven't tried NCQ, obviously, don't vote. You can still see the results by pressing the "View Results" button.

Thanks for all the votes and replies so far. I'm a bit surprised that people find WD drives the most problematic, since I have personally considered them very reliable. I have handeled many Caviar drives, and haven't seen anyone die yet. The raptors also seem above average in reliability AFAIK. I really expected the Hitachi/IBM and Maxtor drives to top the list.

It would be interesting to hear from you who voted "yes" to NCQ benefits. How can you describe the benefits? Does it just feel faster/smoother, especially when multitasking, or do they benchmark higher?

The amount of people noticing benefits with raid 0 was also above my expectation. I'm reffering to ATs test of the raptor in raid 0, where there were almost no improvement at all. Maybe other drive configurations gain more? In that case, it would be interesting to know which?

Personally I don't put too much value in a 5 year warranty over 3 years, since if I have a crash, I would be more concerned about the data I loose than getting a replacement drive. On the other hand, one could expect a drive to be more reliable if the manufacturer has given it a longer warranty.

The results of the defragmentation question was about what I had expected. Personally I have moved most of the "dynamic" content from my system partition to another drive/partition, like the temp folder, temporary internet files, swap file, emails, my documents etc. I still defragment my system partition every now and then, but it usually doesn't get very fragmented.

I'm getting the Raptor 74GB for the system I'm building now, since I believe the harddrive speed is essential to the total system performance. I also store most of my large files on a network drive, so I really don't need a lot of storage space locally.

-------------

02/23 Edit2: I recently added the latest poll, so consider the result there not as reliable until the number of votes catches up. Also, I know it's hard to choose one of these alternatives, as many of these things may be more or less important to you. I had preffered if the poll had the functionality to let you choose from a scale (1-5 for example) for each item, but it doesn't.

One thing to remember when voting and reading the results is that a popular drive will naturally have more failures. The idea when choosing the most problematic HD is to use common sense. If you had 30 WD drives so far, and one of them died, I assume you won't vote for it as being problematic. However, if you bought two Maxtor drives, and both of them died within the month, you would naturally vote for Maxtor as being problematic.

Finally, the brand you prefer does not have to be the brand you have used the most. Your preference could be based on what you have read in forums lately, your friends experiences as well as your own experiences. You could say "Seagate" is your preffered choice, even if you never had one.

Btw, excuse my English; I'm from Sweden ;)

Seagate rules, I've had most of my problems with Maxtor bar none....

speed is more important than warranty, but not if there is a huge margin. WD Raptors still offer a good warranty, and have excellent speed, I think they are worth it, since the hard drive is the bottleneck of any modern system, every little bit of extra HDD speed helps.

I have 5 WD drives in my rig right now. I've had one of them for 4 years now with no problems with any of them. I got a heck of a deal on 2 120gig WD JBs, $3 each when the dust cleared :)

I've had a maxtor crap out on me

I've only used maxtor and WD for computers i've built for other people (8 or so) and I've had 1 WD that was bad right away when I got it, but none have failed after use. One started whinning in someones computer and we got an RMA for it.

So, out of my experience
1 out of 2 maxtors went bad
1 out of 11 WD was DOA, 1 out of 11 started going bad (or at least sounding bad heh)

Where's the poll?

I've used about every brand of HD you can think of through the years, from 1988 to now. I've had 3 HDs fail on me. A Conner, and 2 IBMs, one is DOA and the other die within the year. But aside from that, it's been smooth sailing.

I like IBM/Hitachi's performance and quietness. Have had absolutely no problem w/ Quantum/Maxtor HDs. WDs are fine. The latest HD I bought, Seagate 200GB .7 is not bad either.

Maxtor - Slow, Fail to often, loud.

Western Digital - Good hard drives, 3 year warranty, average performance, low fail rate some noise..

Seagate - Good hard drives, 5 year warranty, good performance, low fail rate, no noise.

Most problems with - I have only had one hard drive fail on me and that was a 1 month old Seagate 160 GB.

Raid 0 - I enjoy raid zero not because of the performance but because it doubles your storage capacity.

Raptor - No I do not feel it is worth spending so much more per GB.

NCQ- n/a

Warranty - Western Digital and Seagate already come with 3 and 5 year warrantys.

Defrag - Maybe once every three months.

Western Digital drives remind me of weekend hotrods and tuner cars... they're hot and loud and unreliable, but they're FAST! And I have a need for speed! :)

I defrag once a week or so. Especially after I've deleted or installed more than one piece of software. Keeps the system running in top shape.

While I have owned Seagate drives in the nineties, I switched to IBM in 2000 and have owned only IBM's since then. I currently have 2 7K250s in RAID0 and have had one fail (with sufficient warning to get my data off) in 6 months. RMA'd and replacement's back in the RAID0 config, but you can guess how much of faith I've got in them.

On my older rig, my 4 year old 30 gig 75GXP breathed its last, and the 3 year old 60GXP continues to soldier on.

I dont think anyone can blame me for wanting to go with Seagate the next time around. Its taken a while, but I've come to realize that it is worth trading a little bit of performance for a big measure of reliability.

Never had problems with any HDD

Raptor II woth it? No

Don't have NCQ

Never tried RAID

warranty over performance? No

Defrag a few times a year. Last My C: was 30% and D: 70%. I could actually feel it ran smoother afterwards :D

I have never had any problems with Maxtor drives, though I have had friends with problems.

Though that is a funny story. He sent back a faulty 30Gb drive and got back a new 60Gb drive, and a refurbished 45Gb drive.

I have 2 IBM 40Gb 60GXPs (RAID1) in my work rig. They are pieces of crap. They are slowly dying. Every half an hour the entire computer comes to a screeching halt for 1 or 2 minutes (even winamp stops playing). I'm just waiting untill they die to replace them. I already replaced one of them a few years ago.

I also have a few Seagate SCSI drives... god i love them!

Maxtor - Slow, Fail to often
Western Digital - Good hard drives, 3 year warranty, great performance, slightly louder than seagate
Seagate - Good hard drives, 5 year warranty, good performance, quiet

Most problems with - Maxtor, had 6 fail in last 15 years (most were 4-6 years old at failure). I dont use Maxtor anymore. had 1 WD drive crash (I've got 9 WD's right now, in 3 machines). I have one Seagate, and it's never crashed.

Raid 0 - I love raid0, but dont see that it actually boosts performance. I do love that it consolidates my drives to one big azz drive.

Raptor - If i had tons of cash, I still wouldnt buy them. though it would be nice to have one for my OS. I would waste the money buying 4-6 to accomplish any worthwhile storage space.

Defrag - Rarely. My storage drives get it once a year or so. My OS needs it every couple of months, but I ussually reformat it before I need to defrag.

All in all, WD gets my dollar, Seagate would, but they are usually a little more expensive than WD. I wont ever buy a Maxtor again.

I've had the best reliability from Maxtor. WD and Hitachi drives that I've had have had problems. I'm looking to try Seagate next because of reliability.

You should add a "I've never used NCQ" option.

Well, the poll is not about how many has tested NCQ and not. I'm trying to gather information from those who has tested it, and what they think about it.

You should probably split the Hitachi/IBM choice into two as Hitachi has improved the reliablity of the drives (of course time will tell). The infamous Deathstar has taken down a number of machines here at work.

All IBM (Deskstar) drives are made by Hitachi though. That's why it was that way to begin with.

In 2001, I put a IBM hdd in my first build. Then I put a second. Then a third. One by one they all failed. Click of death. Like nails on a blackboard. Three RMA'd hdds replaced with refurbed Deskstars. Out of the 3 RMA'd drives two go down. I still am using the three "Hitachi" replacements, but one looks suspiciously like the IBM, but it is still running (as are the other two that are destinctly different (but carry the Deskstar moniker). I also have a Western Digital Caviar SE 250gb hdd. Recently I added a 120gb Seagate (FIVE YEAR WARRANTY) in December and a 160gb Seagate in January (both with $50 rebates; still waiting on the latter). Needless to say, with six hdds in my case they are the noisiest components in my system. :)

I have no ill will toward IBM/Hitachi. All hdds fail and go thru bad periods of reliability. It just so happens to be Maxtors turn right now. For the time being I am going with Seagate.

Everyone will have their own opinions, but i think i will be looking for Seagates from now on.

I have only ever had one HDD fail on me, that one being my beloved Raptor.
I still like WD since i can always seem to find them for less than every other brand, & till now, have never had any problems, but i like the idea of the longer warranty since i now have first-hand experience with a HDD dying on me.

I will not buy Maxtor or Hitachi for various reasons, & Samsungs are a little harder to find here in Canada for cheap, so that leaves me with WD & Seagate.

I currently own two Seagates, & four WDs, but likely i will buy just Seagates from now on, except in the case of my main OS drive being a Raptor.

Of course, did Hitachi always manufacture IBM's hard drives? I thought they bought this division from them, or did they simply take control of it even though they were already producing the drives?

Anyways, regarding my preference in hard drives, I tend to go with Western Digital and Seagate. I just love how silent the latter of the two mentioned is.
