How does Amazon have a vested interest here?

I can unequivocally agree. Fuck this shit, renewables while nothing to write home about - were certainly not the underlying problem. So unless this dipshit is saying renewables was the main power source - and thus the source of the outages (which it wasn't obviously) then he is just blowing smoke and people should be pissed.

Christ, just admit it was a fuck-up on fossil fuel part and fund money to fix it, why does everything from every fuckin' politician have to be a game?
A lot of them probably honesty don’t know. I would bet a large minority, perhaps even a majority believe that renewables were the problem because that’s what right wing media said.

In the past it was definitely mostly true that politicians were cynical and lied to their constituents out of political expediency. Now with republicans, especially state level republicans, they mostly believe their own bullshit.

Texas is also passing legislation to make it mandatory to play the National Anthem before any major sporting event.

I'm hoping these fake piece of shit patriots start scaring business away, realizing that going there while it's cheaper for now is just not worth the insanity of the right wing fascists.

So Houston based Centerpoint Energy which provides natural gas and energy services in several states is asking Minnesota regulators if they can raise rates on their customers there to help offset the extra $500M they spent on natural gas in TX during the freeze. Should only workout to $300-400 per customer in MN. Article suggests they'll pursue the same in other states they serve.

Capitalism at it's finest. I appreciate MN residents who might have to subsidize our TX energy market.

If there is one thing I know about Minnesotans it is how they really like paying extra for things, especially stuff they did not buy.

Well you see our grid doesn't cross state lines so the Feds can't regulate us which is why our weak regulatory environment allows natural gas producers to freeze driving cost spikes that affect customers across state lines and why everyone will have to pay for it. :)

And charging 8.75% interest lol. Maybe Texas can institute a state tax for a year so the citizens can help each other maintain their rugged individualism without screwing Minnesota customers over.

That's not accurate. The Texas natural gas fuckup sent national prices skyrocketing. Minnesota utilities had to pay more, so Minnesota customers have to pay more. There was some sweet, sweet fucking had by people on the right side of the deal. Like this-

That’s a nuance that I guess I missed. Still if Texas had better regulations more of the state NG producers wouldn’t have frozen which meant more available supply and wouldn’t have driven the price as high.

Any way I look at it Texas’s Texas only power grid isn’t really Texas only because they participate in the NG market that crosses state lines.

Texans will likely have higher charges on their power bills for years to come to cover gas utilities', electric cooperatives' and electric companies’ financial losses from the storm and prevent customers from having to pay huge bills in a short time.
Lawmakers are close to passing bills that would allow companies to seek billions of dollars in state-approved bonds backed by charges on customers’ bills to stabilize the state’s distressed energy market.

they really love to privatize profits, socialize losses

Nah, it's almost certainly unconstititional. There's a long line of SCOTUS cases saying the state can't compel speech. Jehovah's Witnesses did not have to salute the flag and say pledge of allegiance in public school, so pretty sure a private company can't be compelled to play a patriotic song.

things sure are heating up, time for summer emergency?
Only June, this is just the start of Texas Summer... and power at $2,000+/MWh across most of Texas this afternoon sure ain't good.

In typical home billing terms, that's a bargain basement price right now of 200 cents/kWh, priced at wholesale - before transmission and distribution charges.

*sigh*

I've obtained gas for my inverter generator so at least this time I can run the fridge and the portable a/c. I keep a much closer eye on the ERCOT monitor these days.

*taps fingers impatiently waiting for my powerwall installation*
