I can't feel that way. My brother lives in the Austin area and had to temporarily move his family in with relatives just to have power and heat... during a pandemic. And having to boil snow just to cook or wash hands is problematic, too.

The state government and the companies/orgs responsible? They can get stuffed! But many people are suffering and warrant sympathy, even if this is only temporary.

Is it fair to make a couple of dozen power providers lose some profits in order to prepare for easily identified extreme weather events that happen every 5-10 years when all it will cost is some lives, billions in lost revenue as the state shuts down and billions in federal assistance? /s

I can't believe something I heard a while ago on MSNBC with an interview of some guy who "knows" Texas politics. The amazing fact is that none of the members on the board for ERCOT live in Texas.

I feel bad for all the good people suffering in Texas. They might have some of the worst politicians in the country but many didn't put them in power. Hopefully this is a wakeup call to those that did.

Hopefully you get to be dealing with winter equipped with power and water. Many of the Texans don't have those. My daughter was without power for 3 days, and still has no water - and has been told not to expect any until Monday at the earliest.

Were talking about freezing temperatures and power being out for ~48 hours for the majority of cases. Not that it's acceptable, but at the end of the day people are complete wuses. Toss on a few blankets, this isn't an apocalypse. I think people were more worried about their internet connection than anything else.

PGE is a CA thing where they had power turned off for a matter of weeks in some places simply from having "dry weather". PGE is damn near bankrupt and already has filed for bankruptcy previously with sky-high rates for incompetent work.

Believe me when I say - no one is going back to CA and it will forever be people migrating away from high taxation combined with government incompetence.

Been there done that when Sandy (if I remember correctly) dumped heavy wet snow that damaged every tree in my area. Limbs and branches everywhere. The lines that didn't come down from trees and limbs were weighed down by the snow which snapped even more cable, phone and power lines. I dressed in as many layers as I could, wrapped up in a blanket while wearing a knit hat in this all electric apt. I was lucky though living in town and near a hospital where power was restored relatively quickly. Many in the sticks didn't have electric for weeks and we didn't have nice warm weather to look forward to. We survived and learned from the experience and so will they. They will also have an interesting story to tell about how they survived the winter storm of 2021.

2011 called and disagrees. Second time in a decade and they did nothing different. Smart people will move out of that shithole state to someplace governed by people who give a crap about the citizens. These once in a hundred year events seem to be taking place a tad more frequently.

I know someone who has been and is still without running water. This is someone in upper middle class who filled their bathtub with water when this first started and has been living off that water. Thankfully they have a gas stove and can boil that water. They will likely run out of water soon and and probably have to leave town which thankfully they have the means to do.

Poor folk must be getting crushed by this. On top of the crappy year we have had with Covid, one more thing to make life ever more miserable.
