As long as the pedal axle spins smoothly and there is no play/slop/movement of the axle within the bearings, you are good to go. In my experience, pedal bearings are notoriously too tight when they are new, which leads to that rough gravelly feeling when you spin it with your fingers.

congrats!

Thanks. Rode ten miles today, not a click.

Yes, that's the way it felt. Felt smooth after my adjustment and I didn't feel slop, so hopefully isn't too loose.

Don't know why too tight pedal bearing would cause an audible click (could feel in foot too) at the top of the stroke, but that's gone now.

Yesterday that pedal started clicking again. :'( Took me a while to remember, realize, feel positive it was that same thing, the right pedal, that was making that click. I didn't feel it, just heard it. Wonder why this is happening, but figure the thing to do is readjust that pedal. I'll have at it today.

Now, it figures that a pedal wouldn't get tighter, it would only get looser with time. So why would it be too tight all of a sudden. Well, that click is annoying, so I'll readjust the pedal and have fingers crossed. It's this pedal:

That new clicking -- readjusting the pedal bearing didn't make it go away. I think the cause of the clicking at the top of the crank turning cycle (for right pedal) was probably something else. I went here: Sheldon Brown's page on clicking/creaking etc. The first thing he said to check was if the pedals are firmly attached to the cranks and with grease on the threads. Indeed, that pedal had come off very easily, too easily. I readjusted the pedal bearing again (it was actually sloppy by now), and attached the pedal firmly with grease and the click has gone away. Hopefully for good.
