Wow, that is pretty sweet. What version do you have on mp3? (NKJ, NIV, NASB, etc)

Pretty interesting. I'm not religious myself but was planning on reading the book someday to gain back ground knowledge.
Link?

I am happy that you have discovered something new and exciting. The Bible is indeed a fascinating book. But that's all it is; a book. Written by humans. Interpreted (over and over and over) by humans.

You were obviously not raised in a religious environment, but are intelligent and interested enough to make an effort to check it out, and that's a beautiful thing. The quest for knowledge of any kind is a wonderful trait. But take it all at face value. Don't let anyone from any religion shove anything down your throat under the guise of "we are right and everyone else is wrong!" Make up your own mind. Remember this; there are about a dozen different religions in the world that cite the bible as their "guiding light." And every single one of those religions claims to be "the right one." :) YMMV

ps
Raised Italian-Catholic (worst kind!) Thirteen (13) years of Our Lady of the Bleeding Knuckles School, Sister MaryViscious, Principal. I have not been a practicing Catholic for the better part of almost two decades. It was rammed down my throat as a child. As an adult, I realized what a farce, sham and crap the Catholic religion is. Now I eat meat on Fridays, have premarital sex, and cohabitate without the bond of marriage. Life is good and I don't see any flames around me.

Well, I have a brain and have never allowed anyone to shove anything down my throat.
Basically I see all kind of fanaticism (spelling?) as a bad thing by default and I don't buy the TV preachers mumbo-jumbo.

[billygraham]
"That's right, brothers and sisters. I can save your soul! Jesus wants YOU to send me fifty dollars to save your soul! That's right, fifty dollars to save your soul. How much is fifty dollars when faced with eternal damnation? For fifty dollars I can save your soul. And if you act now, Jesus has told me that for seventy five dollars, I can save your soul, your families' souls and pets too! So send me seventy five dollars so you can be in heaven with your family, and your doggie."
[/billygraham]

Essentially, that sums up every single "Christian Preacher" out there. They are all crooks and if and when Jesus (or whoever) comes back to save us, he will rip the skin from their screaming bodies for scamming us for decades!

The best part of being human, is that God gave us free will. Take what you will, from the good book, and especially, in your own time. That is the beauty of it. If the message means something to you, or you find something in there you can apply to your personal life, especially something positive, then it is a book that has been a good investment for you.
While I am not a religious zealot, or a big fan of organized religion, I am a believer and have a personal relationship with Christ. I want to emphasize "personal". One's choice is just that....one's choice. That is how I believe Jesus wanted it to be. :D
The reading can be quite an adventure.

Enjoy your endeavors!

Well so far this is what im thinkin in my head:

  • If god is here, howcome he/she is so inactivly involved compared to inside the bible
So far...the bible makes as much sense as religious stories of hinduism ....which dont make much sense ;)

Not really trying to calculate anything...but anyways i belive in A god, i really dont care what form, what shape, but i think to me God is more important the religion and the rest of the "stuff" that comes along with it. I think as long as you belive in god, and pray from time to time god will accept you. You dont need to pray 24 hours a day or pray in a certain way, that is what turns people off from religion....but eather way god is god.

Another dumb bible thread....read the real book, instead of a condensed version. You'll find murder, rape, porn, all sorts of discusting behaviour, over and over. Just don't let the kids see it...

I was one of those children who had religion shoved down my throat also. I read the Bible for myself to see what was really in it. Organized religions are full of misinterpretations/ man-made thoughts. In the end, the Bible doesn't teach religion. It does show how religion has failed over and over. I don't like seeing parents raise thier children in religion, but I do understand that thier intensions are good.

Hey now! Back off from my Mr. Graham! :D

My grandmother listens to him all the time and I was able, as a christmas gift, to send her to one of his revivals in Charlotte, NC a few years ago (OMG, that was like 12 years ago). Anyway, we got to meet him afterwards at dinner and I have to tell you he is one of them most plain unassuming preachers out there. He could have made a fortune or religious empire, but he hasn't. He really isn't that vain. He was a hellraiser in his 20s and so he knows what kind of trouble I get into - but he wasn't judgemental at all. The funniest thing he said to me was that if I found God just before taking my finals just wait till I have a son. And he said girls are worse, then he got elbowed by one of his daughters.

But I agree with you about the others. Pat Robertson scares me to no end. I'm wondering how much of his influence is in the republican party. However, there are some of those "preachers" out there who are more entertaining than wrestling.
Ernest Angely comes to mind (funny video clip of him here). If he really does have the healing touch, then why can't he "heal" his really bad toupee?

Life is good eh? Not what a lot of the other posts about your personal life have claimed. *shrug* How's the gf?

MichaelD, you make some pretty outrageous, stereotyping claims about believers. How about not acting like everyone in the world can be neatly placed into two catagories, evil, unhappy, Bible-thumping, clueless idiots and happy, blissful, peaceful non-believers, and look at the truth that things vary from person to person, from church to church, and from denomination to denomination. Sorry you had religion crammed down your throat- that should never happen. But let go of some of the bitterness and let people explore whatever they want to explore without you trying to insert your ugly attitude about it into their thinking.

I would agree that listening to a condensed version of the Bible is going to be confusing and you'd probably be better off reading however much of it you're required to read for school. Also, the Old Testament gets a little long and boring when they're going over laws and geneology. If you're interested in actually understanding some of the book, read a gospel or two (in other words, take your pick of Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John). Psalms is beautiful, if you read it like poetry, you'll likely take something away of at least literature value.

Like much of the bible you are now entitled to interpret the portions that were random drivel into anything you would like. For example it might be giving you permission to kill that person at work that you don't like. ;)

Hey, if you don't like whats on the radio, change the channel. If you refer to my first reply to this guy, I told him that I was glad he discovered something new and exciting, and I meant that. Bible, painting, mountain climbing, whatever, if you like it, then good for you. I don't begrudge anyone whatever floats their boat. As long as your beliefs/hobbies/lifestyle doesn't impinge on my freedoms, then go for it. If you're a homosexual that worships goats, but only Islamic goats and you like Opera music, then good for you! Just do it away from me.

And AFA me "inserting my ugly attitude" into things; it's a free country and I can say what I like. I voiced my opinion, just as you voiced yours. Neither is more important that the other. And actually, my GF is just fine. I care about her deeply and that feeling is mutual. Unfortunately for me, I do have some problems, such as I can't keep my hands off other women, but I'm trying to work on that. *shrugs* Life is Good!
