BF2 is my new friend

Well I started playing Battlefield 2 today, and i absolutely love it.

I have a 6800GT (415/1120) and i play on 1024 x 768 (they dont have 1280 x 1024 for BF2 🙁 )

anyways, all the settings are on High (but AA is turned off) and it runs nice and smooth, but i was wondering if there is any settings i can put at Medium without affecting the Quality much, if any (just to get a little more FPS)?

For the shortcut to the BF2.exe, set the target to the following:
"C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1280 +szy 1024

That will force 1280x1024 resolution. It's what I use and it works perfect =)

A lot of whiners on various forums complain about a few minor issues with BF2, but for me it's the best one of the series by far. There aren't any show-stopping bugs or gameplay-crippling balance issues. The graphics are sweet. If you find a server with just 2 or 3 people willing to work together, you can have a lot of fun.

The graphics are sweet

I beg to differ.

Gameplay is good, but personally I think there are much better games coming out very soon. I like to commit 1 or 2 years to a game BF2 will never hold my interest for that long.

Thanks, that should make it a little better

rage on.
Having bf2 at 1600 on full is the best looking game ive seen. Maybe you should bump up your settings. And what better games? STALKER? rofl.
BF2 wont be fun for 2 years but the tons of mods slated will. Ive been playing forgotten hope up until bf2 was released and thats on the 2 year old bf42 engine.

I can't think of any game that has kept my interest for more then 6 months, except for a few classics and really well designed games like Rise of Nations, X-COM, Civ 3, maybe CS, etc.

One more question

Is it worth going from 1280x1024 to the next highest setting (which im assuming is 1600x something)??

how much of a performance hit will i see?

hmm im glad nik hardly ever ventures out of OT

I agree with you, bigcool, bf2 is awesome.

Im running default settings, can you tell me what default settings are so i can see if i can go higher?

Default for me was High for everything

I love the game. I could use another gig of ram to go with my 1gig I already have, I think that will eliminate any of the minor lag I still have. I run it at 1024x768 with 2x AA, most of the settings on high, and a few on medium. I'm getting anywhere from 60-90 FPS. My specs are AMD 3200+, ATI x800XL PCI-E, 1 gig 3200 RAM, Abit AN8 Ultra

Bingo. But if you're stuck with onboard, medium audio will give you a significant FPS boost.

@OP : Search the Software thread. Someone made a compilation of tweaks you can do to the game to speed it up, such as lowering certain features that really make no difference.

I'm kind of like you, but BF2 has me hooked. ET: Quake Wars will probably end my BF2 run though.

I think the game is fun, but frustrating. Maybe i haven't played enough yet, but i'm frustrated with the ease with which you can die and the 15 second wait for spawning.

I keep telling myself that this game is trying to be realistic with gameplay which is why it's easier to die then UT2004 and other 1st person shooter online games.....

I'll keep playing and see if it holds my interest.

Yeah, it sucks spawning right in the middle of a bombing raid or right next to an opponents tank. Thats why I usualy always join a squad, then you don't have to spawn near a flag. Squads have made this game alot more fun that would've been without them.

People shoot medics running around with shock paddles too.

1920x1200 4xaa and all eye candy on "high" (audio, too) - and I am averaging 55fps or so online. I have FRAPS and have run benchmarks and the lowest it tends to get is the high thirties when things are really crazy.

This game is just incredible, and whoever said the graphics suck just hasn't played it at the proper resolution. It looks and feels like you are really battling street to street in some foreign city - I just love it.

Sorry if your questions have been answered, but I dont wanna read the whole thread.

Putting settings to medium will not noticably decrease image quality, but will ease the demand for RAM by the game by a lot.

If you have 1GB of RAM, medium settings will allow you to anable AA/AF without the gaming running choppy because you dont have 2GB RAM.

"C:\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1280 +szy 1024

That command line in your BF2 shortcut will allow the game to play 1280x1024. it wont have that option in the drop down menu, but it will default to that resolution.

With your system you should be able to runn AA/AF no problem.

My system in sig runs BF2 1280x1024 medium settings 4xAA 16xAF at ~85fps according to FRAPS.

Audio quality set to Ultra High actually is pretty cool. Obviously you need the X-Fi but you do get some real legitimate improvements. Directional sound is hugely improved. They actually managed to make things above you sound as though they really were above you, and things far away sound like they are in the back of my room rather than simply a quieter sound coming from my rear speakers.

You also get a far sharper overall sound quality and it is definitely more immersive.

I'm pretty pleased with the difference although I do think the actual clarity of the sound in BF2 could be better. (In Chaos theory the sound is fantastic for instance.)

well i have 2GB of RAM, so thats no problem

and i did the command line trick, seems to work (picture is a little better)..... is it worth going to 1280x900 or is 1280x1024 just as good?

Also, is AA/AF really that noticeable (the honest truth, not just to say you can run it, but does it really help that much)??
