I think better memory management is key to BF2's performance. Example:

I use 1024MB RAM and 1024MB Page File located on C only (10GB partition on 36GB Raptor, optimized with Norton's)
Using the Performance monitor (admin tools), I find 30MB free while in game. Half of the RAM used is a cache for the Page File.

In single player, the game runs perfectly. Recently, there have been server-side changes to improve online performance. Manually updating Punkbuster also helps alot.

Also, is AA/AF really that noticeable (the honest truth, not just to say you can run it, but does it really help that much)??

Oh, you definitely have to run with at least 2xAA or the game looks like crap. Well, in other words, it makes a pretty noticeable difference.

ok just checking, ive never ever used AA or AF before on anygame

Does BF2 support AF?
Is that worth it also (and why do i enable it, theres only an AA tab under video options)?

I just did that resoultion trick on the shortcut... man... the detail on higher resolution is night and day compared to 1024x768

But theres a noticeable lag on my rig

P4 2.66 533FSB
1 gig PC2700
X800XT Platinum Edition
420w Thermaltake

running on "High Overall Quality 4xAA"

EDIT:
When I turn quality down to Medium... my Frames go back to 40-60, but .... blech... its not nearly as nice as High quality. ANyone have any custom recommendations to quality... textures, lighting, detail etc?

You should probably run 2xAA, for the settings, you should look at the guides. I know it is good to keep geometry at the highest, so vehicles appear sooner on the horizon.
