I finally decided to get on the bandwagon and installed BF1942 and installed the 1.6 update. First of all it will not allow me to change video mode. Sure it has a nice list but when you click on a different resolution it just highlights it but does not change...even if you save. So I can't see 1/3 of the screen. Then I tried to fire up a game and see if it would change. The server browser sucks ass and i tried at least 20 different servers and got the same "failed to connect to server" error every time. I'm totally frustrated with this game in the first 20 minutes I have spent with it.

I thought that a useable interface was fairly standard these days. Boy was I worng.

I have none of those problems. Sounds like you have a corrupted install.

Go to this folder in Windows Explorer (it's the default):
C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\Mods\bf1942\Settings

Open the file called: "VideoDefault.con" with Notepad.

It should look like this:
--------------------------------------------- -----------------
renderer.setFullScreen 1
renderer.fieldOfView 1
renderer.globalLodRadius 1
renderer.globalLodRadiusScaleFactor 5
console.showStats 0
renderer.allowAllRefreshRates 1

--------------------------------------------- -----------------

Now look at this value:
"renderer.allowAllRefreshRates 1" and change the 1 to a 0 (zero).

This fixed the problem for me. Everythin is now centered in the middle of the screen.

Yea EA is the Devil but the game is fun

Are you picking the light colored servers? the darker ones are not at 1.6 and wont work
You behind a router or ICS and need to open some ports?

Get a copy of all-seeing eye. Although you'll need to go into the server browser and turn punkbuster on first. The video thing sounds like a refresh rate issue.

That's one thing I couldn't stand about that game. It took forever (relatively compaired to games like CoD) to go from the game to the menu (and then back to the game) because it had to load up that video in the background. I like my menus to be simplisitic. Nothing fancy.

A quick google search for 'tweak battlefield 1942' will take you to tweaktown.com. They have a guide that tells you how to turn off the videos in the beginning, speed up the game, fix the refresh rate issue, etc.

I thought this was a tech forum? Why do you guys need to be told this kind of stuff?

Because some people are ignorant and would just prefer to complain than to do something about it.

Yes, no problems is the Norm snatch. What Video card etc and this would probably be better suited for the Games forum area here I believe.

Another thing to remember is the game menus are fixed @ 800x600. Change your Windows resolution to 800x600 and make sure it's centered on your screen like your main resolution. When you choose a resolution in the menu it only changes the ingame res. not the menu res.

Also if you don't want to mess with the ingame menu for setting up your graphics you can open your
C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\Mods\bf1942\Settings\Profiles\Custom\Video.con file and manually change this line to whatever you want... this is how you have to change res. for HDTVs:
game.setGameDisplayMode 1024 768 32 85
That line says I'm running the game @ 1024x768 32bit 85hz refresh rate. You can change it to whatever you want as long as your monitor supports it.

Wel let me ask you this, why should someone have to go to 5 different tweak sites, spend hours reading and downloading and editing registries to get a game to work out of the box?

Ooh.. So then iit is just CRAPPY PROGRAMMING after all. Well then I still have the problem of not being able to connect to any servers. The patch is not the issue. And if it's my router's firewall, then how come the 20 other online games I play seem to have no problem with it?

Ugh...i think this game is just more trouble than it's worth. Back to Halo.

Maybe you just suck at knowing what to do. 12 people on my floor have this game, not 1 has had your problems.

Ok FH, explain to me then with you boundless intelligence how a menu that defaults to 800x600, cutting off 1/3 of the screen, requiring everyone to constantly switch back and forth to the desktop and switch resolutions is in anyway related to me "sucking at knowing what to do." Please, explain that.

Oh and maybe all the idiot friends of yours on your psychiatry inpatient floor don't use firewalls. That would fit.

Who said go to 5 different tweak sites? I said learn to use google and you will find the information you need to make the game work properly. The tweak guide is laid out well, and you could find the fixes you need in 15 minutes, that is, if you have the reading comprehension of a junior high school student. You don't have to edit the registry or spend hours reading. Turning off the movies in the beginning is as simple as adding something to the command line under the shortcut properties. The refresh rate issue, if you had bothered searching, is a common problem and has an easy fix. EA Games also has a (get this) TECHNICAL SUPPORT NUMBER that you could call about your connection problem.

Maybe if you had taken the time you spent getting all pissed off and bitching and crying about your game not working, and applied it to doing some BASIC FVCKING RESEARCH, you might not be having the problems you're having right now.

I'm glad your game isn't working anyhow. Theres enough asshats in the BF1942 community. Go back to halo.

If changing resolutions to 800x600 makes 1/3 of your screen not viewable, thats a problem with your monitor or your video card driver, not the game. My monitor has no problems changing resolutions from 1600x1200 (desktop) to 800x600 (menu) and back to 1280x1024 (in-game). I don't think anyone else here has that problem either.

I was almost willing to help you get your game working, but you're just an ignorant, arrogant piece of sh!t, so why don't you go back to halo and quit your fvcking whining.

I just did....didn't work. Switched the desktop resolution to 800x600. When I enter the game again the game menu is 800x600 and still the 1/3 right and bottom of the screen is cut off. Now I just cant enter any servers because it tells me that punkbuster needs to be enabled and I cant find the bloody button because it's cut off on the right of the screen.

Switch to 800x600 on your desktop. If you can't see the whole screen, then you're a fvcking moron and you need to go into your monitor's on-screen setup and fit 800x600 to your screen. If you can, you're a fvcking asshat anyway and i hope you catch the scabies.

This game is the finest example I can think of to rationalize warezing. If I wasn't so damn honest and bought all my games, I would have known, at no expense, that this was not playable on a standard, modern, high-end system (XP3200, 9800Pro, Dell 1901FP). Tell me, what is there about that hardware that makes my system so exotic that this game requires hacks and reg edits to make it work?

Again, a very compelling argument. Don't waste you limited intellect on this one. It's just not worth it. Game is just too crappy to run on standard hardware. From now on I will just make sure that i try EA games before I buy them.

You couldn't have possibly done what people have already told you to do to fix your problem, because you have been too busy responding to everyone with smartass comments. So, for the last time, will you kindly SHUT YOUR FVCKING PUTRID SPUM GAP, TAKE THE INFORMATION THAT HAS BEEN GIVEN TO YOU AND GO FVCKING DO SOMETHING WITH IT!

The game works for everyone else here. It doesn't work for you because you're a fvcking ignorant tool who would rather bitch than actually try to fix the problem.

People like you made me feel homicidal when I worked tech support.
