Anyone here want to chip in for a bf1942 server's bandwidth? I could put together a whole new machine to run it on, but I dont want to put the money in for the bandwidth. What do you guys think? We could make a contribution requirement in order to become a administrator. Provided you know at least something about what you are doing. I think it could work, anyone else interested?

I could probably throw in a few bucks.
What are we talking about here? $10? $100?

Lash, I'm in the middle of setting up the domain for this, waiting for DNS to resolve. PM me if you want the skinny.

guys just a quick heads up, I don't know how you're going to go about doing this (buying from a game server company/buying a dedicated server/setting it up on an edu connection) but I just want to warn you about http://www.vskgamingservers.com. They ended up cheating my friend out of about $250. The servers were only on about half of the time, and they were completely unresponsive to e-mails.

So, who's setting the clan server? iwearnosox, or Lash444? I'm willing to contribute if we actually get a proper clan going.

I'd like to play but I am not interested in the clan thing. A few bucks would be OK.
My brother is renting a server (and the bandwidth) to host Quake games. He says 24 people can play at one time. I believe he pays $35 a month and they offered him an additional server for $5 more per month.

I'd pay/play :)
yeah I also couldn't care less about clans, I just want a good server with players that won't be calling each other cheaters every 23 microseconds.

Let's get a CoD server. I'd help pay for that.

Is CoD that good?

BTW, WTH is that PIC in your sig?

Yeah, I'm definitely interested in Call of Duty. I'm still working my way through the single player missions but if the multiplayer is as good as the single player, that sounds like a great idea

Would you mind asking your brother which company he is using and more details about that $5/mo offer?

Thanks :)

Will do. I'll send him a link to this thread. If he remembers his log on maybe he can respond. I just got him interested in BF1942 and we played against eachother last night. He showed me a program called "Team Speak". We were able to taunt eachother as we were sniping eachother. :)

Quake 3 Server rented out of San Francisco, CA. Rent is$25.00 a month from this place;
Escaped Turkey

He is able to host 24 players and says that they have other games available as well.

Personall I think 24 players is kinda too little for a game like BF1942.. but that's just IMO of course.

When we get an official server, we should probably do one of those game server rental things that are usually $30/mo. Also, for clan matches we would want to have a 32 person server.

OK, maybe I'm an idiot here, but why couldn't somebody with a cable modem just setup his machine to run as a server? You wouldn't have to pay anything extra for bandwidth. Would the machine not keep up? Would it be laggy? I don't know much about hosting/serving games, I just bring up BF1942 or DC find a low ping game with an opening allowing 32 players and just start whooping up (or getting whooped on).

To have more than 24 players(which requires 1.5mbps upload), you have to have some fat pipes which is expensive, not as much if you go through the game server rental thingy, but it still quite a bit of money every month. A 64 player server is ALOT of money.

BF1942 isnt like Quake3 or UT.

It requires huge amounts of bandwidth, 70kbps on avg per player, but it can range from 50-80kbps. As opposed to Q3 which I believe only requires around 30Kbps per player.

Most cable modems are locked at low upload speeds. A BF1942 server for 24 players requires atleast a 1.5mbps SDSL connection(around $275 monthly for a 1.5mbps SDSL connection) or a T1($500-$1000 a month). 32 player dual T1/fractional T3($1500-3000 a month), and 64 players a fractional T3(5mbps)($3000+ a month).
