Who cares? It is a meaningless gesture.

Unless it gets you laid...

If you need to buy a ring to get laid you have bigger issues. 😛

True, that is why I am glad I did not have to resort to that tactic. But for some guys, especially those still in school, it may work like a charm.

placement of wedding ring varies from place to place around the world. some will wear it on right ring finger instead of left

Yup, and in some cultures the engagement ring is worn on the right hand until marriage when it is moved to the left and becomes the wedding ring (that is, there is only one ring for both engagement and wedding, it simply changes status after the wedding ceremony, though often an inscription is added to the ring as well to note the wedding).

In other cultures, a widow/widower will wear her/his wedding ring on the right hand. IIRC this latter custom was common among younger WWI widows whose husbands had died in the fighting though I admit to having only anecdotal evidence of this.

i see nothing wrong with buying jewelry for each other if you are at that point in your relationship. just don't label it as a 'friendship ring', 'pre-engagement' ring or any of that crap. there is no need.

Here's a related question. I've seen musicians wear rings on their ring finger on their right hand (specifically, Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer). Are these wedding rings worn on their other hand so as not to interfere with their fretboard hands?

When I first got married I realized that the ring may be a problem because I am left-handed. It actually hurt to try to write with the ring on.

I thought about putting it on the right hand because of that, but it took me about a week to get use to it.

That would be my guess in those situations.

Either that, or they want the female groupies to think that they're single. 😛

The correct answer is that they are artists and you will never be able to understand!

All that and also just general weirdness thrown in too. Either get engaged or stay dating. It's stupid to try and create all these silly steps in relationships and extra opportunities to buy things to prove your love. I saw a jewelry company pushing men's engagement rings now. They're just making stuff up to make more money.

Women put too much meaning into a stupid ring. No need to show off to other people that you're in a relationship. Just be in it.

It's tradition; stop being cheap

What does that have to do with being cheap? This tradition is stupid. It was used to show ownership. We are in the 21st century. It's time to move on. If you have to show off that you're in a relationship, that's pretty sad.

If you really want to keep tradition going, the woman's father needs to pay for the wedding since that's how it used to be and was tradition. Mine as well make sure the women stays at home too and takes care of the home cus that's tradition as well. I've moved into the 21st century and finding that women and men can see whoever they want, don't need to get married, or even have a significant other.
