Beware OEM PCs with "24GB memory" (8GB RAM + 16GB Optane)

IF they call it RAM, that would be false. It is not. It is a type of memory though. I honestly don't really care about this as I would never consider a system like that anyway. While I think the ads should be more honest, and I cannot stand corporate shenanigans, I almost feel like someone who buys an OEM desktop kinda deserves the piece of garbage.

Sorry if I sound kinda cynical, but people should learn to computer. It is 2018. I honestly would never recommend an OEM desktop, when you can build your own or have one custom built by a shop if not up to the task.

I quoted it earlier in this discussion. We are just going to have to agree to disagree on this subject. I have no dog in the fight, so it's of no concern of what their listing states. That's for high-priced lawyers to argue about.

No i prefer when people try to contradict each other in a social manner.
You always need to look on the back side of every ticket.
This is the only way you can be prepared incase someone else randomly decides to flip that card.

😉

I think the market that Optane memory is really aimed at is the lower cost prebuilt towers / entry-level laptops, and those customers won't be even looking at NVMe drives. It's kinda like that so many of the prebuilt towers have motherboards that have very few SATA ports (the last HP tower I bought only had 4 total), and only two slots for RAM modules. There are sacrifices made in the entry-level market.

Thats the thing, however as others have stated in this thread why not the 32gb one?
Its because when that number gets too large it stirs up the person to investigate it more seriously.
So if you read 24GB, and u see how most high end is at like 32gb+ you will be less likely to question the reality of it.
Now if you say 40GB, your more bound to go "hmmmm, uhhh.... what?!?!?!!?"

LoL.... Its real shaddy marketing at best.
As i said before it something i TOTALLY EXPECTED apple to pull off, at least to pimp out the new macbook to make them appear worth the insanely large markup on hardware so they become extremely non-service friendly if they require service.

:X

That's not fair... i use a lot of OEMs like Dell and Hp.
There are times and places when OEM's can save you hundreds of dollars vs full out custom, if we include software.
True my house PC is a full custom, but at my office, i have a lot of OEM's.
Laptops also are mostly OEM's.
This scam is something you can totally do on a Laptop PC, especially one from Intel.

I wonder how this works with the Windows 10 shutdown routine. Does it act like RAM and get it's own special spot on the hard drive for the hibernation state (I still think that's pretty much what Win 10 shut down is, unless you turn it off), or does it just get dumped since it's volatile, but not RAM?

Oh, the OEM I saw this listed on, at Staples tonight, was HP. Yeah, that HP. The one that listed their AMD quad-core APU machines, as "10 Core" PCs. (4 CPU Cores + 6 Compute Cores)
Their are a lot of idiot configurers out there now. I bought a Dell 17 laptop with a 256 SSD, a 1 terabyte 5400rpm HD with the new 8th gen intel chip in it. Guess how the idiot configured this thing. It boots off the slow as shit 5400rpm terabyte drive and they waste the 256 SSD as a buffer. I need to get off my ass and reconfigure this pig.

They are also selling 8th gen laptops with 1366 X 768 screens but using the 1080P of the HDMI port as the "maximum resolution".

The 8th gen Lenovo Ideapad 330S is sometimes advertised in this very deceptive way.

Also, seriously, a 15 inch 8th gen laptop with 1366 X 768? Clearly this is just inventory clearing.
