Better gas mileage?

Not exactly. Like i stated earlier and like everyone here prob. knows, you can add/change a lot of stuff in your engine to increase gas mileage. Everything I listed before and crankcase filter, pcv valve, fuel filter, alignments, tire pressure, all-around better air-flow will increase fuel effiency. Of course, nothing is gonna shoot you from 25mpg to 35mpg, but it should get better to the tune of 1-3mpg.
And that one flow master thingy (fan) as seen on tv, does increase fuel efficiency. I don't know how many ppl have come into my work asking for it because they've used it through a company vehicle or a friend has told them about it, but it really does work. However, i think they've been recalled due to some hazard. ha.

Agreed. Keeping your car in tune, maintaining alignment and tire pressure, and all sorts of normal maintenance items will help keep your car up to its original gas mileage. Yes, you can also do some things to the exhaust that might increase mileage to some degree. As for the "take money from the stupid" items, they don't work. But they do make a lot of money for the guys hawking them.

gasoline will aswell but not asmuch, put gassoline on one hand then acetone on the other and see what irritates more. As well it can cause leaks in hoses
 
Lower in the article is says they went from 48mpg to 30mpg by taking the acetone out. That's just unbelievable 🙂 And why would they have to use some scanguage to measure mileage? And why are they measuring gas mileage while the car is moving at 50mph? Recording the number of miles you get each tank should be much easier and more accurate. Seems fishy to me that they've got to all of this work and don't have any real-world tests and results..

If this information is actually useful, we probably would have heard more about it by now (this was posted in march?).

I'll just wait a few more years for consumer hydrogen-electric cars 🙂 $3/gallon isn't that bad anyway.
 
Sounds like snake oil to me. The last big secret I heard about was a magnet that you tied to your fuel line, they claimed it aligned the fuel molecules and caused a more complete burn. The common thread in all of the gadgets and additives that get you great fuel economy is that they are suppressed by the evil oil companies.

I have a better idea drink some beer overnight and in the morning empty your resvoire in the car's resvoire that ought give you a headstart on the traffic-light downtown 😉

It eats through some plastics and rubbers and not others. The same is true for Acetone.

 
AAA checks all sorts of mileage claims, two things work, a low pressure exhaust system, and a vacuum operated switch that cuts off the AC compressor when the load on the engine goes over some level (latter item now standard in most cars).
 
Nobody mentioned that gas tanks on newer cars are plastic!
Sooner or later aceton will make a hole...

That is some reasonable advice for change.

Rubber hoses come in different varieties too. If you use "vacuum line" as a "fuel line" it will deteriorate very quickly. As a mechanical engineer who has a background in plastics, I'm going to have to say that acetone will probably deteriorate the rubber parts more quickly than gasoline, but the effects will not be detrimental because the fuels system parts are already designed to work for years with gasoline running through them.

I wouldn't put acetone on your weatherstripping though 😉

Please, do not be ignorant and try everything that you see. At the Saab 92x forums we already had a discussion over this. Take a look at the rest of the site and you will realize these people are a lot of loonies. Why do I say that? Read this:

I am a Chemical Engineer and I will tell you one more time, do not try this! I can go point by point and show that most (not all) of his points are totally false, but I do not have the time. Also take a look at how much MPGs were gainned by the acetone! From 35 to 50 MPG or something similar? Please...

DO NOT TRY THIS, IT MAY CAUSE SEVER DAMAGE TO YOUR FUEL SYSTEM

If you still try then so be it. Darwin would be proud. 😉
