The Michael Mckean scenes are boring and slow.

There aren't that many of them, and they aren't that long. Clearly McKean serves as, in effect, Saul's conscience. I expect his character will evolve to be more interesting, but for now he does serve a purpose. I don't really understand how people can be so impatient and unforgiving considering the pedigree of the show and how strong it has already proven to be, so early in its run.

I loved Breaking Bad, and so far I love this show too. All the craftsmanship is evident here.

Was nacho in Breaking Bad? Or is nacho a made up character for plot purposes?

They're all made up characters for plot purposes. :colbert:

But, yeah Nacho was not in BB. Either was his mother, Nacho Mama. :awe:

Not at all. With Breaking Bad, the Skyler and Walt Jr. scenes were terminally boring. Most of the Hank and Marie crap was dreadful. I even found much of the Jessie and his retarded friends scenes to be worthless. They have yet to hit a clinker with Saul. So far, the writing is much tighter than Breaking Bad.

All of the characters you have mentioned were critical to telling the story unless what you're looking for is writing a la Sly Stallone, rather than Shakespeare, Henry James, or George V. Higgins (and to me BB had similarities to all three).

+1

I liken it to dynamic range in music. The soft, slow passages give added emphasis and counterpoint and range to the loud, busy ones. All action, all the time becomes a metronomic, one-note bore-fest.

Put gastronomically, most would eventually tire of a diet of only steak at every meal, with nothing else. Side dishes, like complimentary characters in a story, enhance and broaden the overall experience.

Put directly, good writing has depth. Minor characters help tell the story in depth. They serve to illuminate and flesh out and give verisimilitude and nuance to the lives and story of the main protagonists.

Life is not one long car chase. Drama is not just one explosion or shoot-out after another. That is a mono-culture of the mind.

Life is not black and white, it contains the full palette of human experience. Life is not a kiddie cartoon . . . not that there's anything wrong kiddie cartoons. I believe there are several basic cable channels chock full of them. You can go there if that's what you want.

Sorry, guys. Breaking Bad was not Shakespeare, no matter how big your fandom. Boring is boring. It was a good show, but it didn't always fire on all cylinders.

My guess is that you find Shakespeare boring as well. Amirite? :p

Liking it so far. Honestly when you consider exactly what it is, it is amazing that it is better than average if not even dare I say great. Most spin offs suck horribly.

Yep, I've been a sap to try to engage in an intelligent conversation with a fanboy. Live and learn, I guess.
