Best Winamp version

What is the best version of Winamp to stick with??? I notice a lot of folks love the 2.x versions and some others go for 5.x. I dont really have an interest in the video capabilities I just want to use this for my audio files and radio.

Thanks a bunch

people stayed with the 2.xx version because they have crappy computers to run the 5.xx or they didn't like the 'bloat' features.

it's always been preference to be "anti" bloat. If anyone says they can consistently hear an audible difference playing their mp3s from winamp 2.xx and 5.xx is making it up.

I still use 2.9x but that's only because I don't need or want the extra features. Same reason I use Foxit over Adobe Reader. But if you want the extra features then version 5.x is the way to go.

2.81 FTW! It has all the features I'll ever need. If I want to play a video, I'll use one of the numerous video players I have on my computer, not the program that I use to play music with. Plus, 2.81 is the last version in the 2.xx line that I know of which has what I call the 'soft fade' feature when you hit the pause button, and it's something I really like for some reason.

I use 5.08e without the modern skin support, so it looks pretty much the same as the older 2.xx versions.

I use this thing called foobar. It's all you need. It's audio for god sakes. Why people waste there time with winamp anymore ... ???

FWIW Winamp w/ Otachan's plugins sounds the same as foobar (which I also use). Shoutcast is another nice feature of Winamp. The default foobar interface is clumsy, and you need to spend some time tweaking it columns, album art, and other assorted plugins.

Set it to use the classic skin. It loads much quicker and should do fine on older systems.

2.xx for an absolutely simple player + no bloat.

5.xx for a still streamlined player, with additonal functions like library, cd burning, etc...

Because foobar is so damn overly complicated for your average user. It's like the linux of audio players for God's sake!

I do use it, however, for its various tools (fixing VBR headers, replaygain, etc...)
