best weapon to carry around in the city

I don't have a license for concealed carry, but would like to get one soon.

In the meantime, I'm thinking a knife, or pepper spray? Any other recommendations? I don't want someting too bulky, but it needs to be effective (and hopefully not deadly if turned against me)

LOL, seriously....as opposed to the presumptive gun he'll get when granted a CC license.
 
Probably pepper spray. You'll even want to carry it after you get a concealed carry permit; it's a good idea to have a non-lethal option.
 
Fox OC spray. About the most effective stuff you can get. And good shoes that fit tight if you have to run.

If you really need to, just carry without a permit. I don't know where you are, but if you are caught it might not be a big deal. Here it's not. And if you get caught carrying after you've had to use it, then it's not a big deal.

while yes actually paying fucking attention to what is going on around you and not putting yourself in situations is going to cut down the odds anything happening. it is not going to stop it.
