Just let them eat you, that would not kill them, yet cause them far more pain than you could ever do ;)

I think this is the best way... try giving them a treat instead. If they don't warm up to you after a few times, call them into animal services.

Yeah, or talk to the owners. Maybe they only react like that to sadistic little pricks who like to hurt animals.

:D

Edit: Didn't you volunteer for that Biblebeater group? And doesn't that mean you are supposed to value life and not cause unneeded harm to creatures?

No, that is Buddhism.

There are a few things you can do.

1. You can turn and face it and snarl at it. I read that dogs are instintive hunters so when you turn and run they have to give chase. But if you face it and act like you are the attacker, they overload and can't comprehend it.

2. Wear a boot and kick it flat in the face, on the nose.

my wife killed a dog on the way to work this morning.

She was about a half a mile from home. The dog ran out in front of her, she nailed it, it died.
There was a quasi homeless guy who said he was staying in his truck outside his friends house. It was his friends dog.

I drove down there, let the guy put the dead dog on the hood of my car, and drove him back to his friends house. Then I went home and washed the blood off my car (apparently the internal injuries were bad).

What a way to start the morning. :(

That's actually more likely to work than mace. ;)

I'd suggest that, or calling the humane society if it really bugs you.

My shepard acts real agressive towards people when she is in her fenced in yard. The treats thing worked pretty quik with my neighbors. She no longer goes nuts when they get close to the fence well she does but not in an agressive way. Now she wants some damn treats :).

I was attacked by a dog once...i saw him running towards me and at the last second I cocked my leg back and squarely kicked him in the face, right on the nose. That dog just turned around and ran away whimpering. I heard it works all the time

It's interesting how you pass it off as a concern for others. Reminds me of your story of calling the police because a gay man verbally hit on you; seems more like personal insecurity.

So I would say, don't take it as your duty to teach these dogs a lesson unless they actually attack you. Carry pepper spray, and be sure to talk to their owners. Don't try to be a hero.

love(treats) is better, but when that doesn't work a boot to the head will also do wonders. definitely NEVER show fear, that will only make them more aggressive.

>>>>Sorry, if a dog is attacking me it's going to get maced, tasered, or flat out kicked in the face.

Ditto - I used to actually hit a Rott that used ot sneak up on me on my bike route. With the bike - not my hand . After changing my bike route, talking to the owners, and calling the SPCA, without result, I carried a long black stun baton. Not the weaker guns, but a rod, looks like a bike pump. attached it to my bike and rode by. It only took one gentle zap on the nose (500,000v) and I never had to carry it again - just carried the bike pump - scary b*stard of a Rottweiler never left the porch when he saw me ride by.

I was out in the country - my solution doesn't work well in the city.

Yup, you will either cause it brain damage or piss it off enough that it will maul you to death. I would opt for the doggie treats or throw a jar of peanut butter in the yard.

If you really want to show them who is boss, pee on the fence, then tackle them and bite them(of course they might kill you so...nevermind)

what kinds of dogs are they?

Try to be a hero? I'm just trying not to get my legs chewed on.

I only mentioned that to point out that it's not just me they have a problem with - They bark & hit the fence when ANYONE walks by. IMHO one person who shocks the hell out of their nose is going to have a much more lasting impression than one person who tosses them a bone.

[EDIT]I don't know what kind of dogs they are, I can only catch glimpses of them through the fence (wooden fence, with only 1/2" gaps between the boards. They're big enough that they make the fence move a lot, plus they were knocking boards off of it.[/EDIT]

You can try the treats approach for a week or so. That might work.

But if I were you I'd just carry a small, but sturdy stick/club with you and don't worry about it. If they get out, just don't show any fear as nearly all dogs will quickly back down, especially once they're off their home turf. And the ones who don't back down most grown men with a club should still be able to beat the crap out of. I still laugh when I think about that scene in the movie Armed and Dangerous where John Candy gets into a brawl with about 5 or 6 rotweilers and dobermans where he's punching them in the face just like they were a human. But it works. My cousin, who's only an average built guy once had a couple rotweilers attack him on an alley near his farm (similar situation to yours actually.) He'd carried a stick with him and basically just beat the crap out of them until they turned tail and ran. He was a bit scratched up, but the dogs never messed with him again and he got a HUGE settlement out of it. You'd be surprised at the settlements even minor dog attacks sometimes get.

You might be surprised at how well the bone will work.

As is, the owners aren't being negligent and the animals haven't done anything which would justify tazering them. If it really bothers you, call the authorities and ask if there is anything that can be done, out of a legitimate concern for the security of others; that is, unless you really want to be an asshole vigilante.

Im all for bashing its face in with a rock. Thats not acceptable behavior for anyones dog.

But lets face it, its a dog. You cant reason with it. You shouldnt HAVE to use treats, but the dog does not comprehend the difference between right and wrong.

Dont make it a matter of pride or any of this "I shouldnt have to" BS. Give the treats a try, and if it works, problem solved. Besides, treats are cheaper than mace or a lawsuit.

If that dont work, by all means, kick its face in every time it sticks it out. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the head is outside the fence, its no longer considered a "fenced" dog.

I feel your pain, I too have been chased by dogs when I was a little lad.

having said that, I recall when I was in 5th grade ,our teacher read us a story about a half dog/ half wolf creature that this guy had caught and was trying to train. the dog was restrained, tied with a rope (in your case it would be the fence). Anyway, when the dog charged at him, he wacked it with a baseball bat. Did this till the dog passes out. When it came to, it became his friend. Dogs like wolves, will respect only the leader of the pack, the Alpha male. You have to show them that you are that male! Also note that dogs can smell fear, when you have fear, you sweat and they can smell it. they know you're afraid and it only makes them more aggressive.

Carry that bat with you and don't be afraid to use it.

I don't know if you guys missed it but the dogs are currently FENCED. In this situation why provoke? Simply win his favor seems much more easy, will further diffuse the situation and limits stress overall.:)

Tuff love is sometime required though:)

Call of the Wild
edit opps mean White Fang get those confused
Very good book but not a very good idea :)

If I see somebody hitting my dog while its in my fence they are going to get a beat down, well I 'll probably just call the police or something. I don't care what my dogs are doing if they are in the fence and you are outside of it leave them alone. If you are having a problem you better talk to me before doing something to my dogs. Most dogs bark at people when they walk by their fence. Its what dogs do.
