Best way to inflict (non-lethal) pain on a dog?

Now that I have your attention. :)

I have to walk 1 mile to the bus stop every morning (well, 5 days a week). Part of my trip takes me down a sidewalk that is lined with 6' tall wooden fences. The sidewalk is right up against the fence, there is no space between them. There are two houses with dogs that are outside 80% of the time. Both of them seem to think I'm out to rape & murder their respective families, they each come running full tilt into the fence: Barking, snarling, etc. Even though I expect it, it still scares the crap out of me every time. 5:15 in the morning & I'm being assaulted by some idiot dogs.

What's the problem you ask? They're on the other side of a fence, right?

The problem is the fences are old & rickety. A good 10' of fence sways every time they hit it, & one morning a couple weeks ago one of them managed to knock a board off. The board came within inches of hitting me, & allowed them to get their head through the fence. MUCH too close for comfort. The road is a narrow, two lane road, with no shoulder. There really is no better place for me to walk.

This morning as I was (yet again) assaulted on my way to work, I started thinking... What if the next time they pulled that they got a face full of mace? Or maybe a taser shot across the nose? There are several large knot-holes that would probably give adequate access for mace, & a taser would probably work as well.

I'm not looking to kill them (or even seriously hurt them), I just want them to think twice before trying to eat pedestrians. I have a taser, & I can buy mace (bear repellant :D).

Any thoughts?

Depending on the breed, mace may just piss them off. My dad maced a rottweiler once and it just made it REALLY angry.

Call humane society and see if they can do anything. You get caught macing a fenced in dog and it could spell trouble.

Heh, I know what you mean.. it's scary when a dog does that.

Taser on low(if it has such a setting) would probably be the best bet.. the owner might get really pissed if it found the dog drooling and unable to see... heh

Try the Lethal Weapon way... carry some milk bones with you. Dogs love treats, and those who bring them. ;)

I don't think you have any legal right to do what it is you are thinking about.

How about throwing them some treats every day? I bet that will work sooner or later.

My taser is a relatively weak 100K volt... It definitely hurts, & would get their attention, but there wouldn't be any need for a lower power setting.

Actually, your best bet may be to try and make friends with the dogs. If you walk by every morning and mace the suckers, they're just going to get more and more pissed off, and eventually break through that fence one day. I would suggest bringing some dog treats with you in the morning and first throw them over the fence. Once the dogs eat those, if they calm down, try to feed them some through the fence (don't try to feed them out of your hand yet, though!!!). If you keep doing this, hopefully, they'll start to expect treats in the morning, and be happy when they sense you approaching instead of viciously attacking.

I bet you haven't talked to the family yet have you?

Once or twice they've been out there, they should be well aware of it. It's not like they're not there, it's 5:15 in the morning. Even if they're not outside they would be able to hear it.

And then comes the day he forgets to bring the treats.... ;)

I think this is the best way... try giving them a treat instead. If they don't warm up to you after a few times, call them into animal services.

i know the feeling, when i would go for bike rides in the hood it wouldnt be uncommon for a dog to run out from an unfenced yard to chase me. 9 times out of 10 a good water bottle squirt in the face put an end to the chase.

water is easy to carry, and doesnt hurt the dog at all.

Hmm... Maybe I will try dog treats...

My concern would be that it's not just me they attack. There aren't many people out at 5:15, but I've heard them do the same to other people. Not everyone is going to be carrying dog treats, nor should they have to.

Yeah, or talk to the owners. Maybe they only react like that to sadistic little pricks who like to hurt animals.

:D

Edit: Didn't you volunteer for that Biblebeater group? And doesn't that mean you are supposed to value life and not cause unneeded harm to creatures?

You can try adopting two hot poodles and throw em over the fence. That should keep em pre-ocuppied for a while

How about I invite them out for a beer so we can talk about our problems?

Sorry, if a dog is attacking me it's going to get maced, tasered, or flat out kicked in the face.

As much as I like the idea of the dog treats, why should he have to do that? Go for it if you want to befriend the dogs, but don't do it because they scare the $#!T out of you. Don't feed the bullies.

The owners should be involved in this - I don't care how. They need to know their fence ain't gonna do $#!T when a lawyer comes knocking on their door because someone's already in a hospital.

Another obvious solution... since the dogs are fenced in you can't really legally do anything to them. Just walk on the other side of the street when you get near that house. Like you said it's 5:15 so how many cars are driving around?

Or buy some headphones and turn up the music so you don't hear the dogs.

And tell the owners to fix their damn fence. :p

Barking != attacking. But didn't the Bible say something about firing the other gun when you feel threatened? Maybe worded slightly differently, but that's what it meant, right?

No sidewalk on the other side, & no shoulder on either side.

This isn't like a wide, quiet residential street with sidewalks on each side, this is a narrow, two lane road (with lines, reflectors, etc.) with a sidewalk thrown in as an afterthought.

Haha... so one day he will be strolling down the street listening to his music and won't hear the fence fall over behind him and the dogs running him down.
