I am building a new PC and will be insatlling Windows XP. Any thoughts on the best way to partition and format the WD.

Should I use WD software from Site (MY JB drive is OEM) Or should I use Fdisk and Format??

yes use the download when it asks if your using xp even if you are select no then it will let you choose partitions

hope this helps

<< i did a low level format and disk scan using the WD utility, only takes about 14 hours >>

:Q

took me about less than an hour😉

I'm with sharkeeper on this, boot from the WinXP CD and have it format then make additional partitions if desired of NTFS or FAT32 in XP after the install.
That's what worked for me, worked very well I might add.

just put the OS on a seperate partition and then do whatever you want with the rest of the space. I say 10 or so GB for the os and application you install

There is no need to low level format the drive. Just grab a win me boot disk and use the fdisk and format utilities off that. You can use a win98 boot disk if you want also. It will not show the numbers being correct in either case, but it will format to 120GB. I just did mine, so I can assure you it works. I wouldn't use the wd software unless you really want to, it is just as easy the other way. Good luck.

Me personally -- throw it away and get a new one (not WD) but for anyone else -- Boot from the XP CD and format using NTFS (FAST)

🙂 Thanks Guys! I formatted the 120GB JB Drive booting from the XP Disk using NTFS and Everything went well and fast!!

Partitions were 8 GB 50gb 54GB. Why do you lose 6 gigs again? File system?

Thanks for your input!

HD companies say 1GB = 1000MB
Therefore, to them, 120GB = 120000MB

Computers say 1GB = 1024MB
Therefore, to a computer, 120GB = 122880MB

A difference of 2880 MB or 2.8125 GB.
