Best USED 6 cylinder, 4wd SUV?

I'm looking for opinions on the best SUV that's 4wd and 6 cylinders. What's a good website that has reviews or ratings for such vehicles?

Edmunds.com was pretty good but it'd be nice to get multiple sources

The target years are from 2000-2004 and his budget is $17k max (ideally $15k)

I agreed... I LOVE my 1999 and 1/2 yr model (thats right and 1/2). Nissan engies will last a damn long time as long as you change the oil and get scheduled matenience.

4.0L inline 6 with 190HP. You can haul a boat or a trailer. They have 4wheel drive with both automatics and manuals floating around. Price is under $10k if you search for a nice one. I'd get a 97 or newer. You can get replacement engines for $850 and trannies are about the same.

Like I said....under $10k. 😉 But some dealerships do a massive markup on them if they have less than 30k miles on them. They're still out there to be bought too if you look hard.

No problems with this car and I think it was voted a Consumer Reports best buy for used vehicles.

Xterra used to be a small, cramped uncomfortable truck lacking power. The Pathfinder is highly regarded midsize SUV and with the 3.5 V6 plenty powerful.

Size and engine. The first generation Xterra's came with a pretty gutless 3.0L V6. They tried to band-aid that a bit by slapping a supercharger on it on the higher end trim, but that just made it "acceptable" in performance but killed milage and required the use of premium fuel.

The '02 (I think that was the model year) Pathfinders started using the 3.5L VQ which is a pretty potent engine.

The Pathfinder is just a bigger vehicle aimed at carrying 4 people + stuff. The Xterra is aimed at a much younger crowd with a lot less leg and cargo room.

Having been an ower of an S-10 blazer, a GMC Jimmy, and having spent multiple weeks in an Envoy/Trailblazer rental I can honestly say that the GM offerings have absolutely NOTHING except price on the offerings from Toyota & Nissan.

There's a reason that I've got a Toyota sitting in my garage even though I have over $4,000 in GM points waiting to be used.

Except the 2001 has the VQ.

I don't like the 4.2L I-6 in those; not enough low-end torque. Sure it makes 270HP/270trq, but its all up high in the power band. I guess it has enough power to tow, but I wouldn't want to; you'd be revvin' all day 😉

Do they make them any better now than they did in the early 90s? Because they SUCKED balls then for reliability...right up there with VW and Hyundai.
