Too small IMO; I dunno about that 3.7L V6. Its supposed to make 235 torque, but I'd rather have the good ol' 4.0L I-6. That thing had torque RIGHT as you hit the gas. I never drove a 4WD model, but I hear you can smoke all four wheels w/that engine 😉

4.0L inline 6 with 190HP. You can haul a boat or a trailer. They have 4wheel drive with both automatics and manuals floating around. Price is under $10k if you search for a nice one. I'd get a 97 or newer. You can get replacement engines for $850 and trannies are about the same.

Do they make them any better now than they did in the early 90s? Because they SUCKED balls then for reliability...right up there with VW and Hyundai.

Huh? Are you making things up? There is nothing unreliable about a Cherokee. Early Grand Cherokees had a few issues, but those were sorted out by 95.

Have you considered a V8? In larger SUV's, a lot of times the V8 gets similar mileage with a lot more power. I would get a V8 Grand Cherokee if that's the size you're looking for. The I-6 versions get like 1-2MPG better. If you can afford a Hemi-based GC, I think those have multidisplacement and get like 17MPG(?) in the city.

I can lift the driver's front tire off of the ground if I stomp on the gas in my Wrangler 😀

The ol' I-6 was great, that thing would last forever. And strong too. Drove a 2000(?) Cherokee 4.0L automatic 2WD for a while, DAMN that bitch had some torque in her. 😀

interesting, I'll have to ask my friend about it

I can't kill my 97' 4runner limited. She's got 140,000 miles on her and still running strong. I've heard a 1/4 million miles on these things isn't unheard of.

EDIT: Just saw you're wanting an 00' model or better, but my above advice still applies.

Jeep or old chrysler slant 6 engines are hard to kill and if you do happen to kill a jeep straight 6 are easy to replace and cheap to come by.

The v8 motors will cost you more to buy and have replaced. They have used the same 6 banger for ever so if your looking to keep the car forever may want to consider this.

Jeep Cherokee's will last a long time! Jeep made the engine after a semi engine, which explains the thick cylinder walls and the large amount of oil it holds.

You can get them for pretty cheap, and they look decent if it matters...

I own both an Envoy and a Wrangler.

Both being I6's, I have to go with the Wrangler if it's going to be used in the Country.

I'd take a previous gen Pathfinder..don't like the redesign.

I agreed... I LOVE my 1999 and 1/2 yr model (thats right and 1/2). Nissan engies will last a damn long time as long as you change the oil and get scheduled matenience.

sweet, we have the same car. I have the blue one. 🙂

No problems with this car and I think it was voted a Consumer Reports best buy for used vehicles.
Yeah my dad has the '99 model, his is black mine is white, and his suspension is alot more loose than mine, I feel like I'm driving a truck when I drive his car opposed to a good solid car when I drive mine.

The era of the SUV is over, that fad is deadder 'n a doornail. Folks seen driving Hummers & Porsche Cayenne's are objects of sympathy.
Recommend not wasting your $ on one.

And yet it's absolutely true !

Not for families like mine. I have a good sized family, and me, im 6 foot 4 255lbs. Im not getting in a small cramped car just because of gas mileage. Thats why i bought a motorcycle. I own a 2k3 Dodge Ram quad, and a 2k4 yukon. The truck, is a toy, and was bought as our family vehicle originally. Then we got the yukon when we found out we were pregnant, and would take too much of a loss on the dodge to get rid of it. Next year, i will be getting rid of it for a smaller truck, but still a quad, and still a v8.

You all can say what you want about GMC, but their vehicles are reliable, and very comfortable. I would buy 3 yukons instead of buying another dodge though.

For your best choice, i say the pathfinder, or the 4 runner.

I don't care what your personal opinion on SUV fads are nor does their popularity have any influence on my inquiries about them

Edmunds.com was pretty good but it'd be nice to get multiple sources

Thanks

The target years are from 2000-2004 and his budget is $17k max (ideally $15k)

This falls with in your targeted price range
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI...em&category=80765&item=4558281324&rd=1

An M548A1 makes other SUV's look like play toys.

2001+ Pathfinder.
The VQ engine is very powerful
BUT................ (there is always a but) It uses premium unleaded gas
You can use regular, but the power and the milage go down, so its a wash as far as $$ goes.

I should know, I own one.....love it

Also, eopinions.com and autos.msn.com are just 2 places to find consumer reviews of trucks

I don't like the 4.2L I-6 in those; not enough low-end torque. Sure it makes 270HP/270trq, but its all up high in the power band. I guess it has enough power to tow, but I wouldn't want to; you'd be revvin' all day 😉

inline 6s always has more low end torque and a flatter curve compare to the v8s

Pathfind without a doubt. The VQ engine won been best engine for several years in award category.

4Runner - you will flat out not find anything more reliable. Look at JDPower (http://www.jdpower.com/cc/auto/index.jsp) to confirm this. Mine was amazing. Keep in mind that jeeps have a repuation for reliability problems

QFT

4runner, it's leaps and bounds ahead in reference to their 4x4 and drivetrain system. And it just won the top spot in the SUV caategory for retaining its price.

This is me last weekend, and as you can see behind me in some of the pics a cherokee tried to follow but bottomed out twice and then got stuck. I didnt even have to use my electric rear diff locker and pulled him out. 4runner stock clearnace is also far better, get a 99 with a diff locker (yes mine is modified 3 inch lift, longer shocks better articulation and some 32s).

This is my other big forum:

There is a reason the toyota forum has almost DOUBLE as many posts and members as any of the other forums.

couldnt agree more. What era? So moronic to spout off opinion and portray it as fact with no basis. since when is buying cars a fad?
