So after renting a truck for the week (dodge 1500) It became clear to me how much more supoerior they are to any car...reguardless of speed :p So anyways the only thing that really got me was that the engine on the 1500 i rented felt like it had issues...like in the mornings it would idle hard and in hot (it was 115 today) it was sluggish.

So anyways is there any reviews out there of the various motors? I've tried a V8 F150, 250, triton, hemi, dodge 1500, 2500, chevy 2500,3500 and i guess out of all of them i liked the triton the best but from what i hear (and seen from just the line at the ford service center) it isn't the most reliable. What about the Titan or Any other packages out there? I'm looking for something with a towing package to help dad out, tow horses fairly regularly and need somethat that could pull a trailor + 2 horses + feed for a week up some pretty crazy uphill grades...

UPDATE: Memorial day sales just tempted me too much. Ended up going with a dodge Dakota /w V8 Magnum engine. Retail: 25K I got it for 17.5. It has power, isn't quiet as heavy as the 1500, but I'm happy wiht it :)

intriguing that you test drove the dodge/ford 1/2 tons but not the GM equivalent.

anyways... this was run once before. it basically comes down to dodge, or chevy for towing. get a diesel.

Chevy has the best transmission, dodge has the best engine. after that its up to you which you prefer for looks, and quality.

Dodge 2500/3500 Cummins turbodiesel. The ONLY difference between the 2500 and 3500 is the front axle and the dually option. Get the 2500 unless you have excessive requirements (which it doesn't sound like)

yeah i just wish desiels didn't cost so much :( and i still would have to get around town in it to go back and forth to work...i like the size of the chevy 2500, any bigger and its jsut to tuff to park anywhere most of the time.

The only reason i didn't try GM was they were at the end of all the dealerships and didnt feel like walking that far lol

Best engine? The Cummins diesel in the Dodge Ram. No contest. Only problem is that the rest of the truck is pretty much crap and Dodge couldn't make a reliable transmission if their engineers' lives depended up on it.

My personal all-around choice would be a F-Series with the Navistar (International) diesel and Ford's new automatic, but that's really because I'm biased towards Ford over GM/Chevy. Neither the Ford nor the Chevy/GMC would let you down and they have a great overall package. The Ram just seems to be getting by on simply having the Cummins without having the rest of the truck to back everything up.

EDIT: Stay away from gas engines for any heavy-duty needs. There's just no point. Worse mileage and lower performance.

OK, I want some advice too. Best "real" truck for around 5 grand (of course used).

what make/model/year should I look for to get a decent vehicle for that money.

I'm not really interested in the baby trucks you see driving around, and I don't want a gigantic monster, either.

You have no idea do you. None at all. I got about 7. :p

Drakkon, you need a Dodge Cummins, preferably stick if you want it to last. The autos overheat if you look at them funny. Or, just get a CXT. I am seriously concidering getting one, but I need a CDL first. Stupid Illinois airbrake law.

1. Rent a Chevy
2. Find a Dodge at an intersection.
3. Accelerate
4. Rear end the Dodge hard enough to mate his engine to your tranny.
5. ???
6. Profit!

buy a 4300, and then customize it yourself, saves yourself the money, but its only 2WD, and it sits higher :D looks MUCH cooler too, but is only 2 doors.

They don't make a stand alone controller for the Allison. I wanted one bad, but after months of looking no one had one. Granted this was about 2 years ago, maybe Allison finialy made one.

The V6 is one of the best in class, with an earth shattering 252 ft-lbs of torque available at 4500 RPM.
The Accord-based unibody on the Ridgeline has increased torsional rigidity to handle a payload of over 1500 lbs.
The AWD system is derived from Acura's revolutionary SH-AWD, which on the new RL, bested the mystical and elusive Nissan Skyline GT-R at the world famous Nürburgring.

I'd say that's one capable pickup!
