Sure celery is low in calories, but it taste like ass.
A cheese burger is delicious but has calories through the roof
I am looking for some middle ground here...sacrafice some calories for taste and taste for calories...

What is the ideal food that taste good but yet still has a low calorie content?

Celery tastes bad because you don't know how to cook it. I used to hate celery until I went to culinary school. Try taking the fiber off with a peeler and simmering it in chicken stock.

almost all healthy food tastes awesome, if you know how to prepare it properly.

After tracking my calories for about a month, it became very clear that the items that skyrocketed my number of calories wildly compared to anything else are the items that you probably already knew about to begin with: Cheese, Pizza and anything deep fried.

Just by reducing these items alone made a huge difference so I haven't felt the need to get much more sophisticated than that.

If I think of specific items that better answer your question I'll add them later :)

I don't think pizza is specifically high in calories. Around 300 a slice isn't too bad. Ff you have 2 for dinner with a drink, that is easily a decent sized meal.

I think the best calorie to taste ratio food is probably chicken, specifically boneless skinless breast. As long as you don't fry it, it is healthy and can taste pretty good. Fish is up there for me (but I like fish).

I can't eat 2 slices :p I have to have the whole 8 slices LOL.

I like cooking cajun chicken with peppers and rice. Not that high in calories but 500g of chicken, 2-3 peppers, 2-3 onions, the spices and 120g of uncooked rice. This would be about one and a half meals or 2 smaller meals.

Beef casserole is another go to option for me when I'm dieting. Loads of mushrooms and carrots. Slow cooked, tastes great, low in calories due to only carrots and onions. Mushrooms have nearly no calories in them.

Mince with spices, onions and mushrooms. Tastes great and relatively few calories.

What I found was that the quantity of food that I normally eat in a meal brings me anywhere from say like 250 (for a healthy meal) to 600 calories max (for an unhealthy meal). Same amount of food but in pizza = ~1,000 calories!!! It's on a whole other planet, why? because it has a lot of cheese, bread and poor quality meats, and I'm guessing the worst culprit in that is the cheese.

These are very rough numbers from memory btw, the point is that pizza stood out as easily being double or more in calories for the same amount of food. Anything deep fried was the same or similar.

You need to get creative with your recipies. I recently made a great pasta bake that made four servings, 30g fat, 72g carb, 100g protein.

Wow more protein than anything else. What were your rough portions/ratios of ingredients?

Oh whoops, I just looked at MFP and realized the macros I posted were for two servings -- but still, one serving is 15g fat, 36g carb, 49g protein. Here are the ingredients:
  • 21oz chicken breast
  • 170 grams of spinach
  • 6oz of pasta
  • 112 grams of mozzarella cheese
  • 3/4 cup of roasted garlic alfredo sauce (Ragu brand)
First I bake the chicken breast a little more than halfway through (around 20 minutes at 375F). Then I shred it in my Blendtec and add a decent amount of salt and pepper to the final shredded mix. While the noodles are boiling, I cook the spinach down in a large pan with a little olive oil spray. Then, I mix the pasta, chicken, and spinach all together in a big bowl. Finally, I pour the alfredo all over the mixture and mix it around some more. Finally, I dump all the cheese on top of the mixture and bake it in the oven in a 9" x 9" Pyrex dish at 350F for around 15-20 minutes (YMMV). I take it out when the cheese on top is starting to get browned. I check the temperature in a few spots to make sure it got hot enough to finish cooking the chicken.

The first time I made it, it was a little bland so I have been recently adding some Italian herbs (and more salt) to it before I bake. Really delicious -- I don't get tired of eating it!

There is a reason I don't order pizza, and that is because I will eat the entire thing.

Yeah, pizza is calorie dense, but not terrible. I mean 750 calories is about what my meals turn out to be. Granted, I eat a very light breakfast (a piece of fruit or two) and only have lunch and dinner as my real meals.

Tuna with Chipotle Tabasco sauce in it. mmmm
There are a lot of really creative ways you can prepare tuna and shredded chicken. I like these the most because they have low fat and are high in protein.

Turkey Bacon is pretty great IF you can forget everything you ever knew about bacon. Just wipe the slate clean and you might find that it isn't bad.

I like cooking up 4 egg whites with 2 egg yolks (the other 2 yolks go to my dog, who has a wonderfully shiny coat), sprinkle in a bit of shredded cheese, make up some turkey bacon, and toast up a high fiber English Muffin. I wouldn't call it a healthy breakfast, BUT, I don't feel guilty about eating it.

Turkey pepperoni is also pretty great. You don't even have to forget all you know about real pepperoni. It's not the same, but it is close enough that I don't miss the real thing. Turkey pepperoni is much lower in fat and still has high protien. Of course, my dog behaves wonderfully once I take it out of the fridge.

That would be like apples and peanut butter. A peanut butter banana sand which. Or you could try baked foods instead of fried.

Grilled chicken is always good. If the person cooking it sucks you may need to cheat to get it edible though.

Most people extremely overcook chicken and dry it out making it taste like sawdust. If that happens I'll throw a slice of cheese on it, or break out the hot sauce.

My tip is to ignore the food safety temperatures from the FDA. I think they say to cook it to 165 or whatever, but if you do that it seriously tastes terrible. I cook mine to as low as 150 and they are always juicy and delicious.

My GF is not allowed to grill chicken anymore. It is always so dry and awful... I just couldn't get her to understand you don't have to cook it for an hour and a half before it's done. =(

I do a tablespoon of i cant believe its not butter, 3 small chicken breats, onions, 'shrooms, tomato and some cajun spices. Overall its about 250 cals, 30g+ protein, <10g carb and little on fat, too.

I also found a new treat. Cocoa almonds. 20 of them are about 150-160cals and they taste AWESOME.
