Best series of all time?

I'm pretty torn on this one. I've read the Lord of the Rings so many times that I can't even watch the movies without getting mad. They are done as well as you could possibly do - but there is so much detail in the books, I get upset to see the things left out. The world, the history, everything is so in depth, its a great story.

On the other hand, I recently read the Dark Tower series, and its fantastic. The idea behind the story is great, its really interesting, and the characters are very well developed, you really have a lot of empathy for them. The only knock on the story I see, which causes me to give my vote to LoTR, is that I wasn't a huge fan of the ending...

If people post up some more ideas, I'll get a poll going. I'm sure Harry Potter will make the list...what else?

I thought LOTR was a rather bad series in the end; very dry and honestly pretty boring. I appreciate the brilliance of the intellect behind crafting its world, though.

I think George R.R. Martin's Song Of Fire And Ice series would be right up there.

Sean Mcmullen's Greatwinter Trilogy is excellent as well, especially if you're looking for some truly original sci-fi.

A Song of Ice and Fire
Ender's Game Series
The Drizzt books from R.A Salvatore
The Dune Series

Those are some more I'm sure people will throw out there.

Good call on Ender's Game, I've read most of that one, but I got bored after the first four. When the story shifted to Bean, I just didn't think it was that great anymore.

I've been meaning to read Dune I've heard good things.

Terry Pratchett's Discworld books.

If you like fantasy and comedy mixed with a little seriousness here and there, there is nothing finer.

Dune, Rama, LOTR, will have to read the sequels to Ender's Game before I make a call on that

Lots of good stuff so far. My SF favorite series after Tolkien (No particular order):

Dune - Frank Herbert
Foundation - Asimov
Ringworld - Niven
Shannara - Brooks
Amber - Zelazny
Riverworld - Farmer

I barely finished the first Rama book. I just couldn't get into it at all. Ender's Game was great but I heard mixed information about the sequels.

wow, the Hardy Boys...i used to read them all the time in elementary school

Discworld, John Carter of Mars (although they seem to get really repetitive), Lensman, Fafhrd and they Gray Mouser, Conan, Kull, Solomon Kane, El Borak, Cormac Mac Art, etc.

I've never actually finished a series. I've read Ender's Game which was pretty good but I stopped there. I've also read Red and Green Mars but stopped partway through Blue Mars because it was turning into a Marxist circle jerk.
