I havent read any Anderson in a LONG time. Good choice there too!!

A lot of very good writers mentioned here.

I have read a huge amount of books, both science fiction and others and of all of them the creatures created by Frank Herbert in "The Jesus Incident" still stick in my mind 20 years after reading it. On this basis alone, I'm gonna have to go with Frank Herbert.

Vintage - I'd say Asimov, great short stories, awesome Foundation series.

Modern... Tough choice between Orsen Scott Card for me and Neal Stephenson. OSC writes characters really well (ex. Enders Game) and Neal Stephenson can create a interesting Sci-fi world better than any other. Once I finish this Tad Williams Otherland series I might have to add that as well...
